US Membership
editThe United States was a founding member of this group, but seeems to be absense the last 30 years or so. Can anyone say why?--Dudeman5685 11:13, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
Hey, it been like, three years and I still haven't got an answer. If I really cared, I'd found out for my self by now.--Dudeman5685 (talk) 05:02, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
This is my main question as well, seems sort of significant particularly if the US were members and pulled out, as you suggest.Pugsworth (talk) 13:59, 13 October 2009 (UTC)
- A little searching turned up http://www.c-spanarchives.org/congress/?q=node/77531&id=7017337 , http://www.heritage.org/research/Internationalorganizations/wm2348.cfm , etc. From those links, I can't really figure out what the specific grievances at the time were, but in general the U.S. relationship with many international organizations went significantly downhill with the rise of "third-worldist" ideology in the 1970's, and what many in the United States viewed as the dominating stranglehold of voting blocks of tinpot minor dictators and mini-Mussolini tyrants under the one-nation one-vote rules of such organizations, while the U.S. has been assessed a membership fee which is astronomically higher than that paid by the third-world countries (so that in effect the U.S. was paying exorbitant fees to support denunciations of its values). The relationship between the United States and the United Nations has still never fully recovered from UNGA Resolution 3379 of 1975, even 35 years later... Behind closed doors
editIs it true that most IPU meetings are closed to the public and if so, is there a source for that besides Tony Fleming's blog? see http://tonyfleming.org/index.php?paged=2 Sarsaparilla (talk) 21:40, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
First Filipina President
editDuring 112th Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly in Manila, Cayetano was elected President of the 10th Meeting of Women Parliamentarians during the sidelines of the annual meeting. On April 17, 2008, Pia was elected for a 2 year term, president of the Committee of Women Parliamentarians of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) during its 118th General Assembly in Cape Town, South Africa. As the first Filipino and Asian to head it, she ran unopposed and takes over from Uruguay's Monica Xavier.[1] --Florentino floro (talk) 06:16, 18 April 2008 (UTC)
