Nice article about the CEO in Institutional Investor
editThis article about the CEO is quite good.[1]. I used some of it for the history section, and more of it could be used. John Nagle (talk) 07:00, 7 November 2015 (UTC)
- I know, I've read it through and through and used every relevant bit on the primary article that actually is relevant to the company history, Interactive Brokers Group.--ɱ (talk · vbm) 08:05, 7 November 2015 (UTC)
Contested deletion
edit@Jytdog: It doesn't matter what the sources are (as long as they're reliable, which they are); this company is very verifiable and notable. I arranged for this article to be split from Interactive Brokers Group, where most of the information exists. There's a complicated web between IBG and its companies that isn't easily apparent; perhaps reading the history section could help. Basically none of the information about IBG should be placed in this article because it's more relevant to IBG as a whole, but IB is the more notable entity. Yet merging (which is what the page was initially) makes the subject far too muddled and confusing.
I had more information on this page which may have further established its notability, but that information was removed. I had a conflict of interest, having previously been employed by IB, so I haven't wanted to make any changes to correct that. I hope you or other readers could. What I likely may end up doing is creating a draft for this page that includes more notable aspects, including summaries of the overall company history and what they do. ɱ (talk · vbm · coi) 19:06, 19 May 2016 (UTC)
I feel it's also relevant to add that I write in a neutral fashion. That should be apparent on the IB articles as well as all my other work. I have no intention for promotion, advocacy, or misinformation; I have simply stated notable or contextual details about the company. I have been and continue to be a Wikipedian long before and after working for them, and take that role in the forefront over any paid position. I have gotten far too much grief from other editors over all this, once to the point of nearly quitting. Wikipedians need to be less assaultive towards our own. ɱ (talk · vbm · coi) 19:21, 19 May 2016 (UTC)
- You make a mistake in taking this personally. An article based this much on press releases cannot be neutral as it is formed so much from what the company says about itself and wants said about itself. It is about the article. Jytdog (talk) 03:30, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
- @Jytdog: If it is nothing personal, please rescind the AfD to allow me to work on something that can better pass notability criteria. I believe a more acceptable version of this article can easily be created. I don't want to be tirelessly arguing for the article's worth anywhere or any more, especially as so many people are so biased against companies and paid editing. Please allow me to improve the article to standards. Thank you. ɱ (talk · vbm · coi) 18:41, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
- I like companies, and I think paid editors who follow the policies and guidelines can be great contributors. Stop personalizing this. The AfD has nothing to do with that, or with you, but rather with this poor article supported mostly by press releases. When I work on content, i work on content. Jytdog (talk) 19:22, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
- @Jytdog: Listen, I'm aware you're not taking this personally. What I'm asking for is a bit of time to improve the article before it's judged on AfD or elsewhere for how well it stands up to guidelines and policies. Please. ɱ (talk · vbm · coi) 01:00, 22 May 2016 (UTC)
- I went to library and found a bunch of good sources and am going to rewrite this. Jytdog (talk) 02:52, 22 May 2016 (UTC)

Hi, why did you tag the article Interactive Brokers with {{COI}} and {{advert}}? I am a historical researcher; I wrote the article from a neutral point of view. There's no fluff, merely plain information about the company. If you don't agree with that, please provide examples. I had many others look at the article to ensure its neutrality, and ultimately, a totally uninvolved editor reviewed and published my draft of that page, the version live now. Can you please remove the tags, or explain in much further depth why you believe why the article "may require cleanup" or "contains content that is written like an advertisement"? ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 02:29, 14 January 2018 (UTC)
- Your version was a lot less messy. The COI tag was placed because a major contributor to the article appears to have a close connection with its subject. I may be just a simple potato from a humble background, but I believe that the "Interactive Brokers PR team" probably has a close connection to Interactive Brokers. The lede starts by claiming that they are the largest this and the largest that, and what follows is a lot of nonnotable detail about how one genius against all the odds defeated the evil bureaucracy that would not allow his computers to rule the stock market. (((The Quixotic Potato))) (talk) 02:42, 14 January 2018 (UTC)
- I highly recommend that you contact the users Jytdog and David Smith 111 (preferably by pinging them from the article's talkpage). Jytdog has experience dealing with COI issues, and David Smith 111 makes edits like this one... (((The Quixotic Potato))) (talk) 02:57, 14 January 2018 (UTC)
- I did it for you. I am curious what David's relation with IB is. (((The Quixotic Potato))) (talk) 03:13, 14 January 2018 (UTC)
- The idea that you are not responsible for the stuff you wrote because "
a totally uninvolved editor reviewed and published my draft of that page
" is of course bullshit. Editing by proxy usually makes stuff worse, not better. Anyone can easily convince a young inexperienced newcomer to move a page from draftspace to mainspace, even if the page is very very bad. (((The Quixotic Potato))) (talk) 03:16, 14 January 2018 (UTC)
- @Ɱ, Jytdog, and David Smith 111: Please work out your differences here on this talkpage. @Jytdog: please feel free to remove the tags if and when you want to. See User:Ɱ/COI. (((The Quixotic Potato))) (talk) 03:10, 14 January 2018 (UTC)
- I just know that edits that include adding "whose PR department writes this page and edits it every day, explaining the exclamation points at the top of the page" is not constructive. Jytdog (talk) 03:40, 14 January 2018 (UTC)
- True. See also User_talk:Ɱ#Hm. (((The Quixotic Potato))) (talk) 03:42, 14 January 2018 (UTC)

- Wait, wait, wait. What on earth is going on here? That David Smith has done nothing but delete paragraphs of the article for no reason, among other vandalism. He's not at all related to why I contacted "The Quixotic Potato". I contacted them because they put two tags on the article that have no justification. I demand to see what exact material, quoted from the article, they believe "may require cleanup" or "contains content that is written like an advertisement", justifying either of those two tags. ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 04:51, 14 January 2018 (UTC)
- Also, do you know anything about the meaning of the Triple parentheses? I feel attacked and urged to report you. ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 04:53, 14 January 2018 (UTC)
- David has been blocked. If you actually read the article you linked to then you'll see the sentence: "In the wake of these actions, some users, both Jews and non-Jews, have intentionally placed their own names within triple parentheses as a sign of solidarity". Not sure why you feel attacked, you recently attacked Jytdog and then myself. You should probably stop insulting people. (((The Quixotic Potato))) (talk) 06:31, 14 January 2018 (UTC)
- Most Jews, me included, take offense to its usage at all, and especially by any non-Jews even if in good faith. You don't seem to have any comment above or on your userpage showing any support for Jews or anything like that, so I can mostly only interpret it by its original racist meaning. ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 14:52, 14 January 2018 (UTC)

The 2021 Gamestop Situation
editSome of you might have heard about the Companys founder making some pretty problematic and in a way self-incriminating comments on his appearance on CNBC on January 28 amid the Gamestop short squeeze situation. In my opinion, this should be added to the companys page and his personal page as well. Millionjt (talk) 11:06, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
- When a significant number of brokers have placed limits to these stocks for the good of their own clients, it's not newsworthy to mention in each and every article, not to mention anywhere outside of the page about the short squeeze. ɱ (talk) 15:10, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
- If it's been covered by reliable sources, I don't see why it shouldn't be mentioned. Benjamin (talk) 22:22, 29 January 2021 (UTC)

Hello! I'm the Director of Public Relations for Interactive Brokers and have created a Wikipedia account to serve as a representative of the company and propose changes here on the Talk page for editors to consider and implement appropriately. I'll avoid editing directly because of my conflict of interest, and appreciate help from others to bring the page up to date. To start, I'd like to suggest some corrections to the existing Employees section:
- "Interactive Brokers Group has nine directors" should be changed to "Interactive Brokers Group has eleven directors", per the company's 2020 annual report (available here, page 17)
- "1,365 of them hold company stock" is sourced to a 2016 annual report. The claim is outdated. Can this be removed?
- "Approximately nine percent of employees work in legal or regulatory compliance departments" is sourced to a 2015 annual report. Can this also be removed for being outdated?
I hope I'm submitting this request correctly and seek assistance from editors to review and update the article appropriately on my behalf. Please let me know if you have questions. Thanks! K at IBKR (talk) 15:21, 4 January 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for submitting this request. I've updated the number of directors and have tagged the other information with the year that it was accurate. If you can point me to up-to-date figures about the employees I'd be happy to update that too. —Mx. Granger (talk · contribs) 18:06, 20 January 2022 (UTC)
Update for Locations section
editThis edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest was declined. |
Hello again! I'd like to request an update to the Locations section, which currently says: "The company also leases offices in Chicago, Washington, D.C., West Palm Beach, Montreal, Vancouver, Boston, San Francisco, Secaucus, Zug, London, Dublin, Luxembourg, Tallinn, Budapest, St. Petersburg, Vaduz, Mumbai, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore, Sydney, and Tokyo." This list is outdated and based on a 2017 annual report.
Per the final page (148) of the 2020 annual report available here, I propose replacing the text with: "Interactive Brokers Group also leases offices in Chicago, Washington, D.C., West Palm Beach, Montreal, Toronto, Zug, London, Dublin, Luxembourg, Budapest, Mumbai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Sydney, and Tokyo."
Can an editor please review and update the article appropriately? @Ɱ: I see you've edited this article many times and participated in discussions above. Might you be willing to take a look? Thank you! K at IBKR (talk) 21:29, 11 January 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for this update. I've edited the article accordingly. I don't see Washington, D.C. on that page of the source, though, so I've left it out. —Mx. Granger (talk · contribs) 18:14, 20 January 2022 (UTC)
Requests for Operations section.
editThis edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest has now been answered. |
@Mx. Granger: Thanks for reviewing my two requests above! I will take a look at the article changes. Next, I'd like to focus on the "Operations" section.
- The sentence "It provides correspondent clearing services to 200 introducing brokers worldwide" is sourced to a press release from 2014. Is it possible to have this removed or note the year this figure was correct?
- The next sentence says, "The company serves 720 thousand client brokerage accounts, with $170.1 billion in customer equity." I propose updating the text to "The company serves more than 1.65 million client brokerage accounts, with approximately $370 billion in customer equity"", per this source and this source.
- The next sentence "Interactive Brokers Group has $75 million in tangible assets, including $24 million in computer equipment" is sourced to the 2016 annual report. Can this be removed or put into historical context?
- This paragraph also says, "Currently about 17.3 percent of the company is publicly held, while the remainder is held by employees." The figure should be updated to 21.8 percent, per the company's 2020 annual report (shared above and available here; pages 32 and 81). Related, the second paragraph says "as 82.7% of the company is held by employees". This should be updated to 78.2 percent.
- Finally, the sentence "Mobile transactions account for about 10% of the company's retail orders" is sourced to a 2015 story. Can this be removed or put into historical context?
I hope someone can update the article on my behalf. Please let me know if you have questions. Thanks! K at IBKR (talk) 21:40, 25 January 2022 (UTC)

Last two sentences of Operations section
editPart of an edit requested by an editor with a conflict of interest has been implemented. Some or all of the changes weren't supported by neutral, independent, reliable sources. Consider re-submitting with content based on media, books and scholarly works. |
Related to above, I'd like to specifically address the last two sentences of the "Operations" section:
- "Investors can open accounts online and there is no minimum required, though maintenance fees are sometimes charged. New customers are directed towards Traders' Academy, the company's education resource, which includes series of videos on IB's products and trading tools."
The text is no longer accurate, and should read: "Investors can open accounts online, there is no minimum required, and no account maintenance or inactivity fees. New customers are directed towards IBKR Campus, the company's education resource, which includes series of videos on IB's products and trading tools." This source can be used to update the first sentence. You can see IBKR Campus being used here, at Business Insider, on the company's website, etc.
Thanks again to Mx. Granger and others for reviewing! K at IBKR (talk) 21:40, 25 January 2022 (UTC)
- Partly done: I partly implemented the request with some wording edits for clarity. The relevant source does not mention "maintenance fees", so that part of the suggestion was not implemented. Thanks for your request and the helpful formatting :) Actualcpscm (talk) 17:24, 12 November 2022 (UTC)
Requests for History section
editOn behalf of Interactive Brokers, I would like to propose some changes to the "History" section:
1. The first paragraph says "one of his properties on Hutchin Hill Road in Woodstock, New York".
- Request: This is a very specific location. For privacy and security reasons, could this be removed or changed to "upstate New York"?
2. The paragraph also says "At the time, the AMEX didn't permit computers on the trading floor."
- Suggestion: "At the time" could be replaced with "In 1977"[1], per Institutional Investor
3. In the "2001 to present" subsection, after the end of the second sentence ("... created the Boston Options Exchange."), I propose adding the sentence: "In 2002, Interactive Brokers launched the Integrated Investment Management Account that allows trading of stocks, options, futures, and exchange traded funds around the world from a single account.[2]" (per Markets Media)
- I understand content on Wikipedia does not rely on company websites, but if helpful, this link demonstrates current use of Integrated Investment Management Account.
4. Immediately following is the sentence "Also in 2002, IB introduced Mobile Trader and an application programming interface for customers and developers to integrate their mobile phone systems with the IB trading system."
- Issue: Mobile Trader and Application Program Interface (API) are two different offerings, so I think some clarification might be helpful here. I propose replacing with the following: "Also in 2002, IB introduced Mobile Trader giving customers the ability to trade anywhere and Application Program Interface for customers and developers to integrate with the IB trading system."

I have a few additional requests for this section but I'll share those in a separate request. Can User:Mx. Granger or another editor please review and update the article on my behalf? Thanks! K at IBKR (talk) 14:17, 4 February 2022 (UTC)
- Hi @K at IBKR. If you believe in good faith that sensitive private or non-public information has been made public, please contact Oversight immediately here in accordance with WP:RFO. Never request edits or otherwise draw attention to such material. As far as I can tell, since the content in question is appropriately sourced and thus considered public knowledge, this does not apply here. I don't understand what the security concern is for public knowledge. If you believe that I am mistaken, which is always possible, follow WP:RFO.
- I will come back to this request shortly, but the above information is highly important. Actualcpscm (talk) 14:33, 13 November 2022 (UTC)
- Suggestions above:
- Suggestion 2 disrupts the flow of the section and does not add highly relevant information, so it will not be implemented.
- Suggestion 3 is not supported by the source; in the article, the product is called "Universal Account". There is also excessive detail here. Update the sentence as follows: "In 2002, Interactive Brokers launched the Universal Account that allows users to trade a large variety of securities."
- Suggestion 4 is not relevant to the current state of the article.
- Now for the suggestions below:
- Suggestion 1 suffers from excessive detail and is written like an ad. I cannot currently verify the first source due to a paywall, so this will not be added for now. Sentence 2 is already part of the article, I have added a source. I have rewritten sentences 3 and 4 to: "In 2019, IB launched the low-cost account offering "IBKR Lite" and fractional share trading."
- Suggestion 2 is also soapboxing. It was added to the article by @ScepticalChymist, who has since been permanently blocked for editing with an undisclosed conflict of interest. I have edited the section to be more appropriate.
- Suggestion 3 is again excessively detailed and written as a product description. Please rewrite this to be more appropriate. Actualcpscm (talk) 20:16, 13 November 2022 (UTC)
Additional requests for "2001 to present" sub-section
editPart of an edit requested by an editor with a conflict of interest has been implemented. |
Hello again! Though I'm still waiting for review of a few requests, I'd like to propose some specific changes to the end of the "2001 to present" sub-section.
1. There are a couple milestones missing between 2017 and 2020. After the sentence, "In May 2017, IB announced the sale of the market making business conducted by its Timber Hill subsidiary, including its market making software, to New York-based Two Sigma Securities", I propose adding the following:
- "Also in 2017, the company began offering client access to Bitcoin futures trading on Cboe Futures Exchange (CFE) and the CME.[1] Milan Galik was appointed chief executive officer of Interactive Brokers Group in 2019, succeeding founder Thomas Peterffy, who remained as chairman of the board.[2][3] In 2019, Interactive Brokers launched IBKR Lite, a new offering with zero commissions and unlimited trades on U.S. stocks and ETFs.[4] The company also broadened investor access to more expensive stocks by offering fractional share trading and cash quantity stock orders that same year.[5][6]"

Fractional investing ... surged this spring as legacy brands like Fidelity, Charles Schwab and Interactive Brokers jumped into the fray. It allows investors to buy partial shares — by the slice — an option that has particularly resonated with millennials in recent months as the U.S. stock market clawed back from its March lows.
2. Next, I noticed some redundancy at the end of the section. Currently the last sentence of the second-to-last paragraph says, "In September 2021, the firm announced that clients could now trade cryptocurrencies." Then, the first sentence of the last paragraph says, "Since September 13, Interactive Brokers' clients are now able to trade and custody Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin and Bitcoin Cash alongside the already tradable stocks, options, futures, bonds, mutual funds and exchange-traded funds." To reduce repetition, I propose deleting "In September 2021, the firm announced that clients could now trade cryptocurrencies."
Then, since deleting this sentence would remove mention of "2021", I propose changing the first sentence of the last paragraph to the following, which also mentions PTC: "Since September 13, 2021, Interactive Brokers' clients are now able to trade and custody Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin and Bitcoin Cash through a partnership with Paxos Trust Company alongside the already tradable stocks, options, futures, bonds, mutual funds and exchange-traded funds.[1]"
3. Finally, I propose an additional 2021 update for the end of the paragraph and section: "Also in 2021, Interactive Brokers introduced IMPACT, a mobile trading application allowing investors to align their portfolios with their values. The company also launched spot gold trading and GlobalAnalyst, a new tool allowing investors to compare the relative valuations and financial metrics of stocks globally.[2]"

I am hoping an editor can review these suggestions and update the entry on my behalf. Thanks again for taking time to review. K at IBKR (talk) 19:21, 18 February 2022 (UTC)

- Currently the end of the first paragraph says, "The company brokers stocks, options, futures, EFPs, futures options, forex, bonds, and funds."
- I propose adding mention of cryptocurrency, per the article body, which mentions cryptocurrency trading since 2021: "The company brokers stocks, options, futures, EFPs, forex, bonds, funds, and access to cryptocurrency through Paxos Trust Company."
- The second paragraph also says, "The company serves 607,000 client brokerage accounts, with US$128.4 billion in customer equity."
- This should be updated to "The company serves over 1.75 million client brokerage accounts, with approximately US$350 billion in customer equity.", per [2]. I should note, this request is related to this one posted above (I'm seeking updates for both the article body and the introduction).
- I propose removing this outdated sentence: "Interactive Brokers Group owns 40 percent of the futures exchange OneChicago, and is an equity partner and founder of the Boston Options Exchange." I should also note, the article body does not mention a 40 percent ownership.
I have a couple more suggestions for the introduction but I want to keep these requests relatively easy to review so I will follow up.

- Partly done: Suggestion 1 has been partially implemented; the relationship to Paxos Trust Company requires a reliable source. Suggestion 2 has been implemented. Regarding suggesion 3, I have updated the sentence to reflect that OneChicago has been closed, but it remains sufficiently notable to be included. I have added the Forbes article used as a source in the article on OneChicago, which does in fact mention a 40% stake. Thanks for your request! Actualcpscm (talk) 14:37, 15 November 2022 (UTC)
Additional requests for the introduction
editThis edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest was declined. One of the edits is no longer applicable and the other is unclear. |
Hello again! I have two additional corrections for the introduction to submit for editor review:
1. Currently, the article says, "The original organization was first created as a market maker in 1977 under the name T.P. & Co., and was renamed Timber Hill Inc. in 1982. It became the first to use fair value pricing sheets on an exchange trading floor in 1979, and the first to use handheld computers for trading, in 1983."
- This text is inaccurate and does not match details presented in the History section. T.P. & Co. was formed in 1978, not 1977. Also, the company became the first to use fair value pricing sheets on an exchange trading floor in 1978 (source), not 1979. I understand the company's website should not be used as a source, but even the History section says "At the time ... the firm became the first to use daily printed fair value pricing sheets". If you review the sentence in context, "at the time" means 1978. My goal here is to make the introduction more accurate and reflective of the article body.
2. Currently, the article says, "Currently about 16.6 percent of the company is publicly held..." This is also incorrect. The text should say, "Currently about 21.8 percent of the company is publicly held...". This request is related to another one above, which provides this source (pages 32 and 81).
Again, my goals here are to increase accuracy and consistency between the introduction and the article body. Thanks! K at IBKR (talk) 20:12, 21 March 2022 (UTC)
- Please clarify what edit #1 is. Do you just want to change the date? if not, please post the new sentence.Edhaves (talk) 09:34, 19 November 2022 (UTC)
- @K at IBKR Edit #2 seem not to be there anymore. Edhaves (talk) 09:36, 19 November 2022 (UTC)
- Not done for now: it's not clear what changes you want to be made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format. Thinker78 (talk) 00:55, 27 November 2022 (UTC)
Request for updates to Company Infobox.
editThis edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest has now been answered. |
Continuing my series of requests, I’d like to suggest updates to the article’s Company Infobox.
- Currently the Infobox includes information from 2020. The information can now be updated for 2021 per Interactive Brokers’ 2021 Annual Report(https://investors.interactivebrokers.com/ir/main.php)
- I propose the following information be updated:
- Number of locations: 24 offices in 12 countries
- Company Net Revenues: $2.714 billion
- Operating Income: $1.784 billion
- Net Income: $1.636 billion
- Total Assets: $109.1 billion
- Total Equity: $10.2 billion
- Number of Employees: 2,571
- Thanks for reviewing, K at IBKR (talk) 16:31, 30 March 2022 (UTC)
- Done Check operating income - I used a different version of your 10-K and the numbers didn't match what you requested. Also, the 10-K doesn't list all the offices, so a better source is needed for some of the locations listed. In the future, you might have more luck getting help if you provide the syntax for the edits you'd like.
