editI have read your wikipedia written about Intercultural Communication. As you write about that, I agree on your idea. It is interaction between individuals and globally people are communicated through many source of media such as internet, skype, face-time, email etc. It is not only cross-cultural interaction but also direct communication between two individuals. There is a lot of wonderful content here. From the class I am currently taking it appears that there is a lot of information that is still missing from this page. As well as different theories that have been overlooked or not expanded on enough. I hope that as a class we will be able to see a lot of changes happening on this page and several of the other pages connected to this one be expanded upon. I also agree with Jamesmin89 on the topic brought up. Intercultural communication is also a direct communication between the individuals and that is one aspect that could be brought even more to the attention of the reader. Great article though, it really sets up the broad topics and ideas that are brought up in Intercultural Communication.

- I agree that this page is definitely off to a good start; however, there doesn't seem to be any link to globalization, which is very prevalent in the idea of intercultural communication. Does anyone else feel as though there should be mention and possible effects of globalization? Another thing that I note in this article is that it lacks anything regarding conflict and means of overcoming conflict through intercultural communication. This page is fairly large, however, I do not believe it encompasses the field as well as it might. We should probably look into making sure that at least each of the theories has its own page. Student editing project - explanation of edits
editHello, I am a nursing student from Brock university. We have been given a Wikipedia assignment to edit pages that are relevant to learning about nursing communication. This page was selected for my group to edit. I want to write this to inform you that some changes will be made on this page by my group and I. Took out parts in problems section that seemed unimportant. Moved things around, organized subheadings. Grouped together verbal and nonverbal sections. editHello,Jm14lp,Ap14bq, Connor, and Dm14qk, I am one of the nursing students assigned this topic to review and if you are willing to hear some of my feedback, I would love to give some. First off I think you all did an excellent job contributing to the article intercultural communication. I noticed that you discussed adding material to the sections “Intercultural communication competence” and as well as to the sections “Non-Verbal Communication” and “Verbal Communication”. I reviewed these areas and thought that it was a good idea to divide the section about communication competence into different sections stating what makes up this concept such as the components, traits, tools, and others. There were also good examples used for better understanding of the topic. However, I found that some of the concepts mentioned were vague such as the introductory paragraph about what communication competence means and it was confusing to follow the way it was explained. This is just my opinion so if any other users have any comments I am open to feedback. I also found that there were some inconsistencies in formatting such as the point bullets that were used in some areas of this section that were then different point bullets further down in this section. For the section on verbal communication I think that the introductory paragraph does a good job depicting the idea of what verbal communication means. Mainly the point about how the messages are being sent and received continuously between the speaker and the listener. However, I hoped to see more information on the language barrier between cultures and how this has an influence on how cultures communicate between one another and get information across. In the section about nonverbal communication I think that the image used was a good image for this specific set of information. Hello, editors of Intercultural Communication. Your article was assigned to me by my communications professor so that I might give feedback. Feel free to counter or agree with my feedback, or ask for clarification. Overall, your article seems well written. One thing I might point out is that to keep the Wikipedia article sounding professional throughout, utmost formal language should be attempted throughout the article. For example, in the first section entitled “Cross Cultural Business Communication” the first sentence says the phrase “…communication is very helpful in building…”. It might be better to remove the word “very”, which is an adverb that has varying subjective tone to it. It may not appear to be a big deal, but it is something to look out for throughout the article. Feel free to disagree or agree with my thoughts on this. Moving onto the section entitled “Problems in Intercultural Communication”, I notice that there are no embedded citations. This might arise the problem of the written text not having good credibility/verifiability. For the Theories section, there seems to be lots of credible information written under the subheading of “Intercultural Adaption”, as I can see all the embedded APA citations. However, to keep the section seamless, using the embedded bracketed number citations instead would be better. Do you guys agree? Hi,Jm14lp,Ap14bq, Connor, and Dm14qk, I am also one of the nursing students who was assigned to review your edits. First of all, good job on the work you have done. Your edits have followed the Five Pillars of Wikipedia. The edits were well researched and informative. Based off of the feedback received from one of the other editors, just keep in mind that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia; hence the information has to be neutral and third person. Under the subsection, ‘The components of intercultural competence,’ the statement, “Let's explore into...” is written in first person. In addition, I noticed that none of the information under ‘Nonverbal Communication’ had embedded citations. The second pillar states that articles must strive for verifiable accuracy and cite reliable and credible sources. So just keep in mind to cite new information that you add on, especially factual information that involves statistics (i.e. “Nonverbal communication has been shown to account for between 65% and 93%...”). Other than that, overall, you guys did a great job on editing this article. The formatting seems consistent and the information added is relevant. Let me know if you would like further clarification. I have a slight suggestion regarding Nonverbal communication, you could add a paragraph about "Food" under the paragraph about object language. There are many characteristics of non-verbal communication between cultures in food, cuisine, etiquette and whatnot. Thus, I suggest you consider writing about food in non-verbal communication contexts. The Four Distances Model
editThe model is based on the concept of relational distance: how people from different cultures can interact effectively or instead generate interactions based on conflict, incommunicability and misunderstandings, is strictly dependent from the feeling of "closeness" or "distance" that emerges in the interaction patterns between intercultural communicators. The 4 Distances Model, originally developed in the area of intercultural semiotics [1] defines the four main variables that can determine relational distance. Each variable has a subset of more specific hard-type (more tangible) and soft-type (more intangible) sub-variables:
- D1 - Distance of the Self. Defined by D1A - Hard Distances: biological differences, chronemics-timing differences between communicators emissions/decoding/feedbacks; D1B - Intangible Distances: identity/role/archetype/personality differences;
- D2 - Communication Codes Distances (Semiolinguistic Distance). Defined by D2A: communication content (hard variables); – D2B: codes, subcodes, signs, symbols, language communication styles (soft variables)
- D3 - Ideological and value distance: differences in: D3A core values, core beliefs, ideologies, worldviews (hard variables) and D3B peripheral attitudes and beliefs (soft variables)
- D4 - Referential distance (personal history); D4A - experience with external world objects, physical experiences (hard variables); D4B internal sensations world, emotional past and present (soft variables)
Each of these "Distances Factor" can be determined by means of observation, psychometric measurements, nonverbal content-analysis and verbal content-analysis. Your definition on the topic of Intercultural Communication includes multiple examples and ideas behind the topic which almost convey an overall picture and idea behind the topic. But with this being said there is always room for improvement and room to add more examples in order to reach the understanding of a bigger audience. I think in some instances such as the theories and the traits examples would help the reader get a better idea of the meaning behind the points and maybe by using relatable examples or examples that may showcase a reader's background and ethnicity could help broaden your perspectives and allow the reader to grasp a greater perspective on the topic.
