Split out the Investment Casting Process from Casting due to the amount of information available, Initially text as per casting page.
Structure to be put in place at later edit to create full page structure as shown below:

  • Investment Casting
    • History (Extract from paper on the history of investment casting written by myself)
    • Process
      • Pattern Manufacturing
      • Shell Materials and Shell Building
      • De-wax & firing Process
      • Casting (metal pouring)
    • References
    • External Links

Question

edit

Why not use the die-cast used to make the wax model in the first place, to make the final meal piece?--200.14.108.1 (talk) 15:50, 27 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

edit

I'm fine with keeping the link to the investment-casting guide added by 71.86.214.60; it looks like it's pretty meaty, and so its worth to WP readers ought to outweigh our general resistance to linking to marketing stuff. PRRfan (talk) 22:16, 18 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Overlap with lost-wax casting

edit

There is a question of article scope regarding this article, and lost-wax casting. Right now, both articles discuss the process, and both articles discuss the history. This article centers on industrial usage history, while the lost-wax article centers on artistic and archeological history.

As I understand it, a more literal definition of lost-wax casting could be "Investment casting that uses wax". The actual medium to be voided is really of little concequence, so I propose a regoranization.

My idea is to merge together both history sections, then use it to create a history of investment casting article, then alter the history section of this article to be a WP:SUMMARY of the new subarticle. Then merge the valuable information concerning the process from the lost-wax article over here. Then, redirect lost-wax casting here. Input would be appreciated. Baring that, I'll just be WP:BOLD and try it out. -Verdatum (talk) 17:56, 13 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

I added links to a diagram as the flash animation and video were rather choppy and I added a link to the PED in regards to this process as the Pressure Equipment Directive is a very important deal in the investment casting/lost wax casting industry. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cayden Ryan (talkcontribs)

  1. A diagram on the process
  2. Pressure Equipment Directive (PED)
I removed the first link because the we already have a link to a flash explanation. I removed the second links because it is not directly related to investment casting. Wizard191 (talk) 22:25, 28 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

The weights...

edit

The weights are inaccurate. Much larger castings can be, and are, made than 300 kg. See Precision Castparts Corporation. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.181.155.130 (talk) 19:54, 11 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Last section reads like a company promo

edit

The last section makes it sound like one company is pioneering 3D printed investment casting when in practice its used by hundreds of companies and thousands of individuals (including me). Stub Mandrel (talk) 21:34, 12 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Process subsection

edit

I propose we subsection the "Process" by using usual === XYZ === headings. AXONOV (talk) 12:42, 25 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
