test

edit

Commit by 219.93.174.108 is possibly erronous. This user (IP) has made other 'testing' commits elsewhere. I'm reverting, and hoping someone else will check this.

traditional/simplified chinese

edit

I stripped the page from having two versions of chinese. It is pointless and unnecessary and sticking to one version is the norm in articles with chinese characters. I left the Simplified version in ONLY as it is the more "official" version. Momolee 06:51, 31 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes, simplified Chinese is the official script being used in Malaysia. Chongkian (talk) 00:31, 17 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

new section for movies filmed in ipoh

edit

Movies filmed in ipoh should be in its own category.... maybe not in one category (due to lacking of content) but in a wider category such as "Arts and Entertainment", etc. suggestions???

Debroglie 13:40, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)

So far we have the Category:Films shot in Malaysia. Chongkian (talk) 04:52, 25 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Relocate this block of text to WikiTravel:Ipoh

edit

Have removed this block of text, which is more suitable in the WikiTravel site rather than encyclopedia:

Shopping in the city center can be quite cumbersome, especially those who travel by cars. Finding a parking space in the middle of the city can be difficult; the number of parking space are simply not enough. However, there are several shopping centers in Ipoh that incorporated with ample parking space. Those are The Store and Ipoh Parade,Tesco,Jaya jusco. The latter is Ipoh's largest shopping center that accomodate two anchor tenant, multi-hall cinema, bowling alley and a food court. Carparks are ample, though it can be tricky in the weekend.

Clarify schools section

edit

Wikipedia editors please check to see whether the claims in the school section ("notable for...") is correct or simply a matter of increasing popularity.

The current commentary on each school in the school list should be removed. It does not represent neutral information and sounds like a biased advertisement for each school. --Momolee 07:13, 10 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

    • Now this section looks better, more NPOV. User:Momolee is right... before the edit most of the stuff is biased.
    • Current list of schools are sorted in alphabetical order. Information regarding Catholic-run schools seem significant (to the history of Ipoh) and have been re-added after removal. Editors please keep it sorted in alphabetical order. And please: do not add cruft or any non-NPOV info about schools. This is an encyclopedia.
The Government tamil school at Jalan madras off jalan sungaipari is not listed.

It was a primary school and i studied 4,5 classes selected to go to english medium secondary at Anderson school in 1959, after passing in the govt examination , when head master was Mr.Nagalingam will anybody give more lihgt on this school?

Vandalism

edit

Ipoh's page has been heavily vandalised. I'm a new Wikipedia user. How can I revert back to older version without manually retyping the text?

    • I've got it. Thanks.

Falim

edit

I've never heard of Falim, can anyone verify if there is such a place? Cavingliz 08:57, 12 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Falim is located between Menglembu and Ipoh old town along Jalan Lahat. It has a few rows of shop-houses along the main road, and a housing neighborhood behind them. Used to be considered as a town of its own before development spread from town all the way to Menglembu. 202.122.158.242 10:26, 20 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Falim has its own Wikipedia article already. Chongkian (talk) 04:54, 25 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Removal of Chinese name

edit

For background, please see Talk:Kuching#Language. Basically, Chinese is not an official language of Malaysia, so by convention, we should not be using it in the article (otherwise, we have no objective standard for inclusion of alternative names - we might as well put the Swahili transliteration in as well). Jawi has a better claim because it is an alternative script for Malay, which is the official language of Malaysia. Johnleemk | Talk 12:11, 14 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Forgive me if I'm being ignorant, but is Jawi an official script for Malay? I know it's been a Malay script before the language romanisation, and it's still practice by certain quarter. I'm not in the position of favouring one language over the other, and I don't see how a few Chinese characters here and there clutter up the page. I read the Kuching talk page, and notice your point. I'm just seeing it that settlements with large majority shouldn't hurt to have a few of significant keywords in its language laying around. The fact is, most people refer the place as so. Pages directed from "In Other Languages" is often not as updated as it's English counterpart, if it's even there; thus, Chinese visitors will not be more likely to visit ZH pages anymore than EN's. I do agree to remove both Jawi script and Chinese characters in the info box, leaving it only English, and nation-wide recognized roman script of BM if it differs from its English name. Any additional important information can be included in the main introductory if it's significant to the place. What do you think? Zhernfai 17:20, 15 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Personally I am inclined to agree - although if Jawi is an official script for Malay (which I think it is), I believe it ought to be included in the infobox as well. I think only official names and common English names should be included in the infobox. Johnleemk | Talk 05:28, 16 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Majority of people from Ipoh are Chinese, and locals are more inclined to use Chinese names, for stuff like food. Mhching (talk) 18:52, 28 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
As of today, Jawi is only official in Brunei (as the official script, along with Latin alphabet) for their Malay language, not in Malaysia. Chongkian (talk) 04:55, 25 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Historical information

edit

In the early 70ties, Malaysian (re-)nationalization led to (re-)naming all of Ipoh's streets (and many other things) from English to Malay. Does anyone have a table of street name translations? Where could one find those and would it be appropriate to add it here? Dirk Riehle 18:20, 25 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Requested move

edit

Why this page name is Ipoh, Malaysia instead of Ipoh, Perak? Furthermore, the move was made by what seems to be a single-purpose account AND without discussion. __earth (Talk) 02:52, 3 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

  • I think its the same reason for Padang, Indonesia instead of Padang, Sumatera. Even though Melbourne is not disambiguated, but normally people will call Melbourne, Australia; not Melbourne, Victoria or Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The reason for doing this is you try to disambiguate with a place that is more common to many people. Not many people necessarily know where Perak is, but people will know where Malaysia is. Hence, Ipoh, Malaysia. (This will be a different matter if Perak is a well known place. Melbourne in USA is disambiguated Melbourne, Florida because Florida is a well known destination, or at least arguably well known). My 2 cents --Zack2007 (talk) 06:07, 4 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Why not just Ipoh? Simpler and does not appear to be ambiguous given the fact that it already redirects here. --Polaron | Talk 20:13, 8 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

YUp. i prefer your suggestion __earth (Talk) 12:43, 9 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

reqimg/skyline

edit

An actual skyline photo be used in the infobox's skyline image option. A single building should not be used, unless this article is about that building. 70.51.8.63 (talk) 05:47, 3 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Please note that the template documentation for {{Infobox Settlement}} says that the "image_skyline" parameter does not need to be restricted to a picture of the city's skyline, despite the parameter name. Tim Pierce (talk) 04:25, 22 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ipoh being the fourth largest city in Malaysia, so is Kuching. Please revise.

edit

As stated in the above headline, both Ipoh and Kuching are the fourth largest city in Malaysia. Should anyone find out the definite position of the fourth largest city in Malaysia, please make proper amendments to both Ipoh and Kuching page. Thank you. Naed yeo (talk) 03:56, 16 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hmmmm.... Ipoh is the fourth largest city by ekonomi Kuching now is unknown --Chiweix (talk) 10:12, 7 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Please visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_urban_areas_in_Malaysia_by_population Ipoh now is the 6th city of Malaysia and year 2011 will be replaced by Shah Alam and Petaling Jaya. Ipoh in year 2012 will be 8th and you will find out the 30 years ago, 8th was Kota Bharu, Kelantan. May be 30 years more Ipoh will be like current Kota Bharu, Kelantan. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 175.137.32.38 (talk) 14:44, 20 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Changes to Economy Section

edit

Hello. I've made some changes to the information presented in the 'Economy' section of this article and wanted to list the three major ones. I've removed the statement about Kuala Lumpur Kepong Berhad being "among the top 15 biggest companies in Malaysia by revenue" as this information appears to change from time to time. I also had trouble finding a reliable citation to support this statement in present times (as it is so specific about being in the top 15). I removed the statement about Hovid Berhad claiming to be "the first Malaysian company to introduce Malaysian generic drugs overseas" as I could not find any sources to substantiate this. Hovid's Wikipedia page has the same statement but also lacks any citations to prove it. Lastly, I've removed the statement about Old Town Berhad being publicly listed as they have since been privatized. If reliable sources can be found to provide citations for the first two changes (about Kuala Lumpur Kepong Berhad and Hovid Berhad), you are more than welcome to re-add the information back in.
