British unionist and Irish nationalist

edit

Adding "British" and "Irish" to "unionist" and "nationalist" in an Irish context, such as here, is not necessary and can be misleading. In Irish politics or history, "nationalist" is always understood as Irish nationalist. In theory, yes, English or Scottish unionists are also nationalists, but the term is never used. And there is no danger of the word being interpreted as Basque nationalist etc. On the other hand, "British" can be read as "from the island of Britain". This is very often not intended by the sentence, which may mean unionists from Northern Ireland and/or unionists from Britain (and/or unionists from the Republic). Check out Gob Lofa's edit history, every article he touches that includes those terms he sticks in British/Ulster and Irish. Mabuska (talk) 16:49, 19 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
Hopefully, he will have read this, and stopped. Scolaire (talk) 18:00, 19 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
I highly doubt it. Mabuska (talk) 22:13, 20 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
Indeed. My problem is that, for people coming to these articles without this understanding, it could be understood that only Irish nationalists are being nationalist and that their opponents have some kind of anti-nationalist philosophy, when most parties are being nationalist in their own way. Not everyone is as familiar with these matters as you. Gob Lofa (talk) 22:54, 20 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
My problem is that, while most parties are being nationalist in their own way, unionists are never presented to as being nationalist in any of the media, and never have been at any time since the union in 1801. Drawing this distinction, accurate though it may be, is adding unnecessary complication. People coming to these articles should find nationalists and unionists presented in the same terms as they would anywhere else. If you want to change the way they are presented, you need to have a book or article published and widely read. Wikipedia is not a soapbox. --Scolaire (talk) 08:06, 23 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
A soapbox for what? Gob Lofa (talk) 20:16, 30 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
I agree that terms likely to be difficult for readers should be clarified on first mention. How that is best done will vary from case to case. "Irish nationalist" and "Unionist" occur early in this article in contexts which make their meanings fairly clear. They are also wikilinked on first mention. Qualifying the terms "nationalist" and "unionist" on subsequent mentions is clutter at best. jnestorius(talk) 10:53, 23 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
Fair enough. Gob Lofa (talk) 20:16, 30 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
