"...the ingrained soot of the chimney-sweep..."?!

Under the heading "Early life", this parenthetical sentence closes the section: "(On his deathbed the ingrained soot of the chimney-sweep was still detectable.)" What, pray tell, is "the ingrained soot of the chimney-sweep"? -some sort of taint of the lower classes that no amount of scrubbing can ever efface?
