Suggested Sources for Expanding this Article's Scope

A focused look into the sensationalist reaction of various media outlets to the proposed "Ground Zero Mosque." The article identifies a clear set of islamophobic talking points in American mass media.
• DeFoster, Ruth. "Orientalism For A New Millennium: Cable News And The Specter Of The “Ground Zero Mosque”." Journal Of Communication Inquiry 39.1 (2015): 63-81. Communication & Mass Media Complete. Web. 4 Mar. 2015.

This article focuses on a study which aims at analyzing the depiction of Muslims in the media and the consequence of Islamophobia in mass media. It discusses stereotyping of Muslims and explores Muslim perceptions of media effects on their collective self-esteem. It concludes that media portrayals of Muslims has affected their acculturation and marginalization.
• "Muslims In The Media: Intercultural Consequences Of An Islamophobic Media System." Conference Papers -- International Communication Association (2011): 1-38. Communication & Mass Media Complete. Web. 4 Mar. 2015.

The goal of this study is to determine the possible factors leading to increased Islamophobia through an examination of public opinion in the United States and Europe. Predictors of anti-Muslim attitudes include being politically more conservative and being older in all countries, and paying close attention to news coverage of the Park51 Islamic Community Center ("Ground Zero Mosque") in the United States.

Include more examples of how Islam is not properly represented in film, television, newspapers, etc. I was able to find a couple of scholarly articles that relate to this, one of which centers on how two leading U.S magazines represent Afghanistan, and another that talks about a movie, The Seige, and how it portrays Muslims in a negative light.

Header and new info

edit

Hi, this is a great article! A couple of suggestions I have would be to expand a little on the header section. Some variety in definitions and a context to the discussion would be helpful. I also suggest looking into Hijacking Catastrophe: 9/11, Fear & the Selling of American Empire, a documentary by the Media Education Foundation which could be helpful in discussing the intersection of media and Islamophobia. --Shishmeh (talk) 03:05, 27 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I found some information that could be of use in the Media Bias section of this article. Please feel free to go to my sandbox and take a look at what I have drafted out so far. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Sschieren/sandbox -- sschieren (talk) 2:20 a.m., 18, February 2017 (UTC)

@Sschieren: Someone recently added a large number of cleanup tags to a part of the article that you wrote. Can you provide any additional inline citations to replace these tags? Jarble (talk) 05:56, 14 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Time for a Name Change???

edit

Any wiki pros out there think maybe I should change this to "Islamophobia in Western media?" It dawned on me that Indonesian news agencies probably don't spend much time sensationalizing or editorializing their Islam-related news. Just a thought...NumberFiveIsAlive (talk) 23:12, 10 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

  • Hi NumberFiveIsAlive. I think Islamophobia in Western media might be ok, but it is likely that the focus on western media is both due to acutal instances of islamophobia (and articles written about it) and the lack of coverage (in english) of non-western media. The anglosphere (and non-english european media) works in a field of inward looking organizations and scholars--Editor and publisher and the CJR are just two examples of organizations that we may be familiar with but whose non-western counterparts may be hidden from us. In that case it may be better to leave the title and see if future editors will add different examples or studies.
  • I've also moved this discussion to the bottom of the page. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 14:19, 13 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Potential additions to this article

edit

Hi. I was thinking about what additions to this Wikipedia page could be very valuable and I thought a section on comparing the coverage between different news platforms may be very interesting. Let me know your thoughts! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yaaks737 (talkcontribs) 01:40, 11 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi, there. I was looking to add some information on media personalities like Frank Gaffney and Melanie Phillips. Additionally, I would like to expand upon how social media plays role in perpetuating islamophobia. Specifically with sites like Facebook, twitter, and even anonymous commentators merits discussion, as well as how 9/11 impacted the way news media covers events dealing with the Islamic population. This could include wording, disproportionate news coverage on some terrorist incidents but not others.

@Dmazero: That sounds good, but this article is not locked. You can just add the information directly without asking permission. Kamalthebest (talk) 03:05, 20 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Dmazero: Go for it! BobFromBrockley (talk) 11:36, 20 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Dmazero: Hold on. As you are new, you are not likely to be aware of our core policies, one of which is no original research. This means that you can't discuss these issues using examples, you need to find sources meeting WP:RS discussing these issues. Even for Gaffney and Phillips you should find sources discussing or quoting them. Doug Weller talk 12:03, 20 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Dough Weller Yeah sorry I know the policy about original research. I guess I didn't make that clear. I have found scholarly sources discussing their influence on perpetuating islamophobia.

This article focuses on the portrayal of Muslims by the media in mainly the United States and Europe. However, Asia, having the highest Muslim population in the world, still experiences Islamophobia through the media in certain parts of the continent. Including examples of how Islamophobia through the media, is prevalent even in Asia, would be an interesting addition to the article.Rhea Mehta (talk) 20:25, 8 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

When you have WP:RS to back this up, add it to the article. A Thousand Words (talk) 10:01, 9 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Re-wrote the lead-in paragraph

edit

Hello all, I saw this article needed a new lead paragraph/section considering the previous one was two sentences, so I wrote one up. Figured it was good enough to remove the "short lead in" flag at the top of the article, but that's just my personal judgement. Let me know if I missed anything or got something wrong, as well as what could potentially be improved or added. Birb God (talk) 22:13, 23 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
