"University"

edit

Do you think there's any need to keep putting university in quote marks? It could get a bit tedious if this article develops further. As the one in the title does not contain them, we could choose to take them all out. It's been made completely clear that it's unaccredited. MSGJ (talk) 18:27, 9 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

I agree - under Irish law, it's not illegal for him to use the name "University", anyway. I'm about to go through the article and remove them. Motmot (talk) 17:47, 23 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Questions regarding the utility of degrees

edit

What about the students who were studying at various colleges who were offering Graduation and Post Graduation courses from Irish International University?

They spent thousands of pounds and studied the course and also wrote the exams and were awarded Degree (both Home Students and Overseas Students-were also issued VISA on the basis of this University).

Is it not British Education Authorities responsible for a bogus University to trade and provide Education to both Home and Overseas Students?

My question to authorities is; what about the Degrees that is there with the students? Will they be honored by the British Authorities and Employers? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.197.248.200 (talk) 22:51, 27 March 2009 (UTC) Reply

These are all excellent questions. There are some good general answers for your questions but there are not Wikipedia:Reliable sources that answer your questions specifically for IIU. That means that answers to your questions cannot be added to the article. I could discuss the detail with you further but the purpose of this page is to discuss improvements to the article. So this is not really the proper forum. I suggest that may want to reask your questions at a proper forum, which I suggest either http://www.degreediscussion.com or http://www.degreeinfo.com . There're are some very knowledgeable and helpful people that post there. Regards, TallMagic (talk) 23:43, 27 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Isles Internationale Université

edit

A few days ago I removed the reference to "Isles International University" with the comment that it was a defunct reference. I note that this name has been restored as an alternative name, with 2 referenced links. However, the references (Sep and Oct 2009) are out date. Before I removed the reference, I checked the website for "Isles International University" http://www.iiuedu.ac/ and found it to be a defunct home page with all links deactivated. Apparently, another re-naming had been undertaken and it is now Isles Internationale Université http://www.iiuedu.eu/ with a .eu instead of .ac URL and a change to French spelling. If you look at the "A Brief History" page http://www.iiuedu.eu/about/history.html of this new site, you'll see a reference to the original "Irish International Univeristity"

This appears to be an ongoing shell game, with regular renaming. It is also worth noting that the "original" (for lack of a better word) Irish International University web site is now operational again, with no references to the spin-offs of the Isles etc. universities that this site redirected to last year.

In summary therefore, I stand by my removal of the reference to "Isles International University" as a current alternative name as being defunct. I didn't change the alternative name to "Isles Internationale Université" as I don't have any independent references to verify the claim from the web site that is linked to the Irish International University".

See here for my comments about this entry

I don't doubt your claim that this name is now unused. However I feel a former name of an institution should be mentioned in the article because it means people know that the two names are one and the same, and also because it's part of the history of the institution. The references provided may be out of date but are reliable sources about the name of the institution at that point of time. Regards — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 20:41, 17 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
yep - I changed my mind after having the same reasoning as yourself. The entry for Isles Internationale Université has now been added as a third reference. --Savlonn (talk) 10:39, 18 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

The article gives as the URL of the outfit http://www.iiuedu.ie. (ie is the top-level domain for Ireland.) This is titled "OLLSCOIL ISLES IDIRNÁISIÚNTA" (that's their capitalization, not mine). This is glossed below: "OLLSCOIL ISLES IDIRNÁISIÚNTA in Dublin, Republic of Ireland". At the top of the page, there's a shield.

At the foot of this page is a copyright notice for "Isles Internationale Universite (European Union) Limited."

Perhaps it's been changed since I wrote this. If so, here is a copy at WebCite of what I saw and describe.

There's a shield at the top and link saying "Enter Website".

Click that link, and you're taken to iiuedu.ac/welcome.html. (ac is the top-level domain for Ascension Island.) This is titled "ISLES INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY" (again, their capitalization). At the top is the same shield. At the foot of this page is a copyright notice for "Isles Internationale Universite (European Union) Limited."

Perhaps it's been changed since I wrote this. If so, here is a copy at WebCite of what I saw and describe.

If these two are not the same, then they are intimately related. -- Hoary (talk) 06:06, 5 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

I suggest we move the article, as the Irish International University name has obviously been unused for some time now. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:17, 5 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
Just hours ago, iiuedu.ie was working fine, and here is the proof. I don't mind if you move the page, but "Irish International University" should then redirect to and be mentioned within the retitled article. -- Hoary (talk) 09:38, 5 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I have moved the article. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:06, 5 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Charter from the British Ministry of Education

edit

Well well, this (archived by WebCite [here) tells us that

The Isles Internationale Université (European Union) receives its name from two sources, the original company register filed in Ireland, and the further Charter from Ministry of Education in the UK to act as a University, deriving into a British Isles born organization, now established in the heart of the EU, elsewhere of the British Isles

(my emphasis)

This is most interesting, in that the UK hasn't had a "Ministry of Education" since 1964. Its current successor in the tertiary education biz is, I believe, the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (half of the previous Department for Education and Skills). But I hadn't previously been aware that the DIUS (or DES) awarded corporations in Belgium charters to act as universities.

Perhaps Wikipedia's readers would like to have this remarkable claim explained.

Incidentally, here is the Vice Chancellor. And for anyone enrolled in xing.com (not me, sorry), here he is too. - Hoary (talk) 10:05, 5 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

You should look again, most of the references are outdated. We are now at 2012! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Profsandhu (talkcontribs)

The IIU's website's claims at [1] have now been changed to the following:

"The Isles Internationale Université receives its name from two sources, the original company register filed in the Republic of Ireland and the further charter from the Minister of Education of the British Isle of Man to act as an international university, deriving into a British Isles born organization, now established in the heart of the European Union."

So instead of the "Ministry of Education in the UK" it is now only the "Minister of Education of the British Isle of Man" (sic). Quite a big difference! I would question what authority the Minister of Education on the Isle of Man has to authorise an "international university". Afterwriting (talk) 10:15, 22 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Nice find, Afterwriting! And just in case something happens to the original here is a WebCite backup. ¶ I see that the Chancellor is Jean-Pierre Poelmans. Who might he be? The owner of JP Associates in Malaysia (where he's linked in), and apparently a chum of the Belgian ambassador to Malaysia and a man who appreciates "grey shrimps in croquette". ¶ So, yes, the Minister of Education of the British Isle of Man. Lovely! Except that the IoM doesn't seem to have such a person. It does have a Minister for Education and Children, Peter Karran. Would you care to ask the Department about this matter? (Their contact addresses are here.) -- Hoary (talk) 13:43, 22 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
I corrected the URL in my original message to the current webpage. For some reason I had included the WebCite link. Afterwriting (talk) 16:51, 22 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Irish International University

edit

User Samalaysian (contributions) has written here and there (example) that Irish International University did not change its name to Isles International University.

Sure enough, iiuedu.ie now doesn't redirect anywhere, but instead announces itself as Irish International University. (It's archived here at WebCite.)

As a university website, it is curious indeed. No teacher is photographed or named, no classroom is shown, no location is specified.

The TLD is Irish. Here (archived here) is the whois record at domainregistry.ie. This says that the "person" (in charge? to contact?) is Hardeep Singh. This name is of course familiar from the start of the article.

Incidentally, in this edit, Samalaysian uses the pronoun "we" to refer to Irish International University. -- Hoary (talk) 13:26, 4 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

A lot of your references have been removed and those remaining are inaccurate reports at media organisations which are facing copyright infringements and legal actions. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jones Simith (talkcontribs) 05:27, 26 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

And they have now been restored as you have not provided any adequate reason for removing them. Vague comments about "legal actions" are not acceptable as an explanation. Afterwriting (talk) 08:26, 26 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Yes, university names can indeed be confusing. A famous pair: the University of York (Britain) and York University (Canada). ¶ Here's a photo of the University of York. Here it is, clearly named, on a map from a third party. Here it is, clearly identified as British, for students of Columbia University. ¶ Here's a photo of York University. Here it is, clearly named, on a map from a third party. Here it is, clearly identified as Canadian, for students of Monash University. ¶ So those two clearly merit separate articles (which they get). By contrast, these variously named instances of "IIU" seem curiously similar (and curiously elusive). Can you present clear evidence of their separate existences? Maps, photographs, exchange arrangements as announced by other universities would be of interest. -- Hoary (talk) 05:34, 27 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
Irish International University is incorportaed in Ireland and registered in IRELAND. It has its OWN LOGO, www.iiuedu.ie
Isles Internationale Universite is incorporated in Ireland but registered in MALAYSIA. It has its OWN LOGO, www.iiuedu.org
The two are not the same. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jones Simith (talkcontribs) 09:37, 28 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

From the Isles Internationale Universite (www.iiuedu.org) website at http://iiuedu.org/about-us_brief-story.html :

"Our parent organisation, the Isles Internationale Université | Europa is a private higher education and research institution registered at Dublin, Ireland and Brussels in the European Union with the European Commission Authentication Service and the European Parliament Transparency Register in the European Union."

Nothing there about being "a company registered in the UK". Last time I checked Dublin was still in the Republic of Ireland. An explanation would be helpful. Afterwriting (talk) 09:55, 27 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Interestingly, this page (archived here) calls organizations having the following websites "partner institutions":

Photographs of IIU

edit

In order to have a better understanding of IIU (for the benefit of our readers), perhaps it's helpful to identify the photographs used in its Flash animation. There are currently three of these.

The symmetrical brick building is the Woolwich Royal Arsenal Gatehouse. More specifically, it's this precise image (compare the clouds, etc, if you doubt this), about which Wikimedia Commons tells us: This file is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 2.5 Generic license and You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor (but not in any way that suggests that they endorse you or your use of the work). I don't notice any such attribution on the IIU website.

The woman teaching kids in front of little posters of Mandela and Newton is rather different. We learn here that in 2010 the photo graced the website of "Isles International University | Commonwealth". We're told that the company name was then "Isles International Varsity (Commonwealth) Limited" (a variant that's new to me). It also slides across the top of this page (and perhaps others too) of "Richmond University", an establishment that offers a University Collage (really) and a School of Gradusate Studies (really).

IIU's library photo also appears on the website of "Richmond University" (not to be confused with other establishments with similar names). And it appears on the "gallery" page of the website of the Hampstead School of English. The larger version of the graphic is here (note "Copyright 2008 Hampstead School of English" at its foot). The same image is here, linked from this page, again about a school in Hampstead. A version that's less cropped is this, linked from this page (direkt-sprachreisen.de), again about the Hampstead School of English. -- Hoary (talk) 01:30, 29 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

www.iiuedu.ac now "The International Inter-University Institute

edit

It seems that the shell game is continuing and and the Isles International University website URL www.iiuedu.ac is now the "The International Inter-University Institute". I suggest that the article be updated to reflect yet another name change. If you go to the new site and click through to "New and Events" and then "Video Gallery", you will see the award ceremony presentation of "Isles International University", though no reference to this former name is apparent on the new website.

Savlonn (talk) 21:39, 13 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

This is not right, Isles International University website is at www.iiuedu.eu — Preceding unsigned comment added by 219.92.35.6 (talk) 05:44, 31 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
iiuedu.ac is indeed the "The International Inter-University Institute"; iiuedu.eu is "OLLSCOIL ISLES IDIRNÁISIÚNTA | ISLES INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY / University for Doctoral Studies, Postdoctoral Research & Publication / Established Since 2000 in the European Union". The latter is quite extraordinary; this page tells us that the address of "The School of Doctoral Studies" is "Brussels Central Station". I wonder what the relationship might be between this photo on the last-mentioned page, and this photo (visible here), and what the descendants of Ralph Erskine think of this little tribute to the man. -- Hoary (talk) 05:21, 1 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
