Bad translation
editFirst, the word "istrebitel" means something along the lines of "exterminator". It is not named after the meaning of fighter aircraft. Second, it is not "istrebitel sputnik", but "istrebitel sputnikov". The difference might look small, but it is important, marking a genitive case. The name means "exterminator of satellites". Latest revert
edit@Flyer22 Reborn: I'm not sure why you decided to roll back the changes I made, I believe I explained the reasoning behind the changes pretty explicitly. I'm also not the first one to mention the fact that the translation is incorrect, as you can see by the note left below by Dunkelfalke more than half a year ago. I am a native speaker of both Russian and English, with 15 years of life in the US and Russia respectively. Is there a reason beyond you not "thinking it's constructive" to have an incorrect translation published on the page? 5.165.77.154 (talk) 01:01, 13 December 2019 (UTC)Mace
- Regarding this, I reverted because of what the title of this article is and because I'm not sure of your translation. The title of the article should definitely be bolded in the lead. Flyer22 Reborn (talk) 01:05, 13 December 2019 (UTC)
- @Flyer22 Reborn: No offense, but the explanation by 5.165.77.154 is totally correct, I can confirm it as a native Russian speaker. Even the article's name is wrong: it should be "istrebitel sputnikOV" (ending in "-OV"), not "sputnik", which changes everything. Literal meaning: "destroyer of satellites". A "satellite fighter" would actually be "sputnik-istrebitel" (in reverse order, and with a hyphen). As to "istrebitel sputnik", there is no such term in Russian. It sounds awful. The guy who made this concoction up should be prohibited from ever editing Russian articles. Not only can't he correctly transcribe a simple Russian word (he wrote "sputnik" instead of "sputnikOV"), he also believes that the term he invented ("istrebitel sputnik") actually exists in Russian. Besides, he drew a wrong parallel with the "fighter aircraft", which is "samolyot-istrebitel" (or simply "istrebitel") in Russian, not "istrebitel samolet". So the name of the article should be changed, and the explanation of the name rewritten. 18:03, 20 July 2020 (UTC)
Title
editI agree with the name change to "-ov" (I have studied a little Russian) but the disambiguation (Soviet project) is unneeded as there is no other article named Istrebitel Sputnikov with which this article could be confused. I suggest moving it to just Istrebitel Sputnikov. I could do it right away, but I think it's best to wait in case there is some disagreement about the article name. Sjö (talk) 09:45, 21 July 2020 (UTC)
- Yes, I completely agree with you. I actually wanted to rename the page to just "Istrebitel Sputnikov", but the robot refused to do it. You could do it right now as I'm sure there would be no disagreement about it. Thanks much. P.S. I had to correct the program's name throughout. Very tedious job. - It's not that simple. For one thing, I didn't see that Istrebitel Sputnikov as a history, which means that I as a non-admin probably can't move this article. The other thing is WP:COMMONNAME about naming conventions. If Istrebitel Sputnik is the most common name in English, then that is the proper name for this article. Yes, it's a Russian-English hybrid that sounds strange to Russians, but there are many words and phrases in English that sound strange to those who speak the languages they were borrowed from. That's why I think there needs to be a little more input from other people. Sjö (talk) 10:34, 21 July 2020 (UTC)
- Well, I just made a quick Google search, and it looks like "Istrebitel SputnikOV" is used more often than the other (wrong) version. The problem is that many people have been quoting the wrong name from Wikipedia, honestly believing it was correct. I guess we should find out how it was called during the Cold War in U.S. sources. Anyway, let's wait and see what others say. Buxareu (talk) 10:45, 21 July 2020 (UTC)
