Italian Levantine has nothing to do with Levantine

edit

Levantine is about the Levant (Syria, Lebanon, Palestine), while Italian Levantine is only about Turkey. Two different geographical areas.T.M. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.69.137.15 (talk) 03:09, 7 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

The term is used for all Roman Cathlics who were under Ottoman occupation, no matter on ethnicity. Levantines were Croats as well as Italians or any other Roman Cathlic who lived in the Ottoman Empire. --Wustenfuchs 16:11, 6 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
I agree with the IP. Italian Levantine IMHO has nothing to do with Levantine and/or Levantines (Latin Christians). The first refers ONLY to Italians, while the other two to Franks, Spanish, Catalans, Portuguese, etc...After nearly 3 years I am going to remove the tag.--Kevinroams (talk) 23:21, 6 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
No, this is not a matter of opinon at all, there is academic research behind it. Levantines is a synonim for Roman Catholics under the Ottoman Empire. Italian Levantine was just a particular subgroup (possibly the most important) inside it, and there is no reason to separate them from the others, exactly because they acted all together as ethnoconfessional group. About Levantines you can read "Levantiner: Lebenswelten und Identitäten einer ethnokonfessionellen Gruppe im osmanischen Reich im “langen 19.Jahrhundert”", the seminal book of Oliver Jens Schmitt, published some years ago. BTW, the tag has no expiration date, it just signals a problem. Alex2006 (talk) 04:42, 7 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
FYI @Alessandro57: both "Kevinroams" and the old IP above were the LTA known as "Brunodam", you can simply revert him on sight, without wasting your time in talking to him. --Vituzzu (talk) 11:19, 7 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
