Relationship to Deep River
edit This village in the town of Essex seems to have arisen as a spin-off of the ivory trade in Deep River, CT, but there's no hint of that in the article. A map shows that Deep River and Essex are adjacent towns (bounded on the east by the Connecticut River), but is inadequate to clarify whether the village is adjacent to DR. (BTW, the broken line at its bottom edge would appear to indicate the (maritime) boundary between NY and CT.)
