I'm tempted to amend the sentence as below, so I'll leave it alone and let someone else fix it.

John Carter Brown III (October 8, 1934 – June 17, 2002), director of the U.S. National Gallery of Art from 1969 to 1992 and a leading figure in American intellectual life, was a notable figure.

This mark would have been surpassed by Mr. Brown's successor, Earl A. Powell III (q.v.) who had served 25 years by late 2017. Johannes der Taucher (talk) 19:33, 23 October 2018 (UTC)Reply
