edit"Since the death of Dr John Stone in 1957, many policies for Stonehenge have been off centre. Dr Stone appears to have been the last civil servant who had a good understanding of Salisbury Plain. He had 36 years of excavating experience on Salisbury Plain. He was the author of Wessex Before the Celts, which was published in 1957. He and Frank Stevens were among the best known people in Salisbury. He was a deputy director of the biological centre at Porton."
"The late Dr Stone has written his contribution for the 'Ancient Peoples and Places' series, and concentrates upon the pre-Iron Age periods; the typescript, mercifully, was drafted before his untimely death."
