Neutral point of view

I put a "pov" tag on the page (i.e. I think it's not neutral point of view). Look, I love JJ Johnson, and think indeed that he is among the finest and most influential trombone players of his generation.

However, if you read the guidelines for "neutral point of view" they say let the facts speak for themselves. So, for example, quoting Steve Turre (with a source) seems fine to me. Example phrases that don't seem NPOV to me:

- "a technique characterized by flawless precision". No human is flawless.

- "He remained essentially unchallenged at the forefront of modern jazz throughout his career." Unchallenged in which contest? This is not fact.

- "a comeback in the late 1980s". I'd say "before returning to performing."

- "friends and family from around the country who universally loved and respected the artist and the man." No one is universally loved.

Unfortunately, I don't have time to go through the article and clean it up right now.

a question of apostrophes

Have changed the position of the previous (as yet unsourced) edit's apostrophe as I presume Gillespie was referring specifically to JJ - in which case it should read:

Dizzy Gillespie encouraged the young trombonist's development with the comment, “I've always known that the trombone could be played different, that somebody'd catch on one of these days. Man, you're elected.”

If he were referring to more than one trombonist, the apostrophe should be placed as follows:

...the young trombonists' development... Technopat 11:19, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

--Yeah, you're right. I made the edit, I'm still new at this, the source to refresh my memory is the website: All About Jazz, but the same information can be found in the book that article discusses, "The Musical World Of J.J. Johnson" Jtn1209 23:28, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

This sentence makes no sense

"Voted into Down Beat's Hall of Fame in 1995, J.J. Johnson's recording career spanned 54 years, from 1942 to 1996, when, his health failing, he committed suicide." - how then did he live until 2001? 24.177.243.244 (talk) 19:45, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

... and this one needs references

Have removed the following:

His incredible accuracy at manipulating the slide trombone (many people who hadn't seen him play thought he must have been playing a valve instrument), contributed to the acceptance of the instrument in a genre where tempi were often very fast and the melodies very chromatic and rhythmically complex.

I'm a wikidiot, I have no idea how to edit the article. However, there are plenty of places to site similar quotes: I have an "All Music Guide to Jazz" 3rd edition, page 608... in fact, pretty much every article you read about J J Johnson will have a similar quote in the first paragraph. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.12.234.107 (talk) 04:02, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

A call for a list of compositions
