Talk:J. N. Findlay

One memory of Findlay.

edit

Having studied Hegel and the corresponding Findlay's commentaries, I was thrilled to attend an American Philosophical Association conference in Milwaukee in the mid-1970s where Findlay delivered a lecture on Hegel's Absolute. Anyone have a copy of that talk? I'd love a copy. After his talk, Findlay was in the lounge surrounded six deep by graduate students wanting the slightest comment or answer to their questions. From afar, I noticed he was holding an empty glass, so I asked the waiter what Findlay had been drinking. Gin & tonic. "Bring me two," I told the waiter, "and every time you see my upright arm holding up one or two fingers from the center of that crowd, bring me that many more."

With an air of authority, I made my way through the crowd, and traded a new drink for Findlay's empty glass. He looked at me funny at first, but for the next hour kept me right at his elbow, answering any questions I had and letting me hear all his comments to others. It may seem a minor encounter to you, but it was an afternoon I'll never forget. It was well worth the bar tab (and the waiter made great tips that day too). --- needham98@yahoo.com
