It is far more likely that someone is looking for the football competition. Firstly, football is far more of a common interest than a particular bus company. Second, the competition is frequently referred to as 'the JPT'. This cannot be said for the travel company.

It is just your opinion that "football" is more important than a bus company. I for one have never heard of a JPT competition but I regularly use JP Travel's services. When there is a COI the redirect should be a disambiguation page. Changed this now. Also I should make you aware that JP Travel is only the trading name of the company and all buses they operate say "JPT" on them, so the same can be said about the company actually. Regardless of whether the company refers to itself as just 'JPT', it is a far more parochial interest. We can safely assume that those outside of Britain are likely to have heard of neither the competition nor the bus company. But the football cup is a nationwide competition. Not only is the bus company a travel organisation which garners objectively less interest (regardless of what you find interesting) than football, it is a very regional company (operating only in Manchester), unlike the cup.Tescoid (talk) 23:19, 19 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Having navigated to this page I feel the need to point out policy on the matter, inline with WP:3O:

When an article title could refer to several things, it is necessary to provide links or a disambiguation page so that readers typing in that title can quickly navigate to the article that interests them.

— WP:D
The whole point of disambiguation is to resolve conflict where a title may refer to more than one topic. In this capacity, as neither is a primary topic, disambiguation seems like the correct approach here. Yes Football League Trophy is a national (English) competition, but its primacy is limited to some association football fans. Simillarly the title "JPT" is a sponsorship name used since 2006 and subject to change again. On the flipside JP Travel is not a "Manchester" bus company of parochial interest, but a Greater Manchester county-wide travel service familliar to a conurbation of 2.56 million people (if not even more people considering JP Travel is relevant to the wider Manchester Travel to Work Area).
There's no evidence that either assumes primacy, and so the principle of WP:D should stand. --Jza84 | & nbsp;Talk  23:14, 22 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
As stated in WP:30, 'When an article title could refer to several things, it is necessary to provide links or a disambiguation page'. In this case, I think links would be better, based on the proposition that the football competition is of greater salience. True, the title 'JPT' is sponsorship-based and so temporary. But this is the point of Wikipedia - that it provides the most up-to-date reference, and can be instantly edited when information changes. So this is not an argument. Also, I hardly think extending the interest of the travel company from simply 'Manchester', to 'Greater Manchester' adds mush to its importance. It is still, by definition, a parochial interest. Also, what kind of 'evidence' would suggest the primacy of one topic over another? This issue is one of subjectivity, so we can only, at best, make informed judgements, not statements of fact. The edits I make are not vandalism. Both Jza84 and Joshii are Manchesterphiles and so give a biased view of the importance of Manchester-related articles. Please don't let your agenda effect the objectivity of Wikipedia. And please respond to these comments.Tescoid (talk) 14:55, 21 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

The Football League Trophy article has an immediate link to the travel company if that is what someone is looking for. This is the most obvious conclusion. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Tescoid (talkcontribs) 18:17, 22 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

As an editor who primarily works on football articles, particularly ones related to Manchester City, I'd like to think I've got a foot in both areas :) In both cases, it is an abbreviation, not the actual name, so neither has a big claim to being the primary topic. A disambiguation page is the most sensible solution, and the one which fits in with the relevant guideline. Oldelpaso (talk) 10:43, 24 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
As I recall from attempts to unseat Channel 4 (UK) from "Channel4" on the basis that many many people associate "Channel 4" with another channel (especially in New York app), the more important principle was that Channel 4 UK got there first. I believe similar principles have been applied to Durham over the much bigger Durham, NC and Darlington over Darlington County. However, a compromise might be to make this page a disambiguation page Pit-yacker (talk) 11:06, 24 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
EDIT: IMHO the football trophy a direct redirect to that is most definitely inappropriate. If JPT refers to the sponsor (Johnstons Paint). Surely Johnstons Paint has a claim to JPT as well?
