Iznogoud

As the name implies, the villainous Grand Vizier of the Iznogoud comics is, in fact, called Iznogoud — not any variation of "Ja'far". I do not know whether Iznogoud should still be mentioned, as a villainous Grand Vizier plotting to overthrow a caliph called Harun is obviously still inspired by the popular Arabian Nights-based depiction of Ja'far (especially The Thief of Bagdad), but something needs to be done. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.34.106.158 (talk) 20:07, 11 February 2018 (UTC)

I too found it odd that Iznogoud is mentioned in a way that suggests such an identification. Unless somebody can point to a statement by the authors "yes we meant Ja'far", or there are episodes where Iznogoud is called Ja'far -- which I don't recall ever seeing -- then there wasn't a reason to assume that this specific vizier was being referenced. Spelling

In this edit Kwamikagami changed the spelling of the name from

Ja{{ayin}}far ibn Yahya Barmaki

to

Ja{{okina}}far ibn Yahya Barmaki

but ʻOkina is supposedly usually for Polynesian glottal stops. Is there a standard convention that the transliteration should use it for this name? By the way, the article gives the Arabic first name as جعفر which seems to be (right to left) the Arabic letters jīm ʿayn ghayn rah. Peter Gulutzan (talk) 14:19, 25 September 2022 (UTC)

I was trying to bring some consistency to the articles. The okina is only used for ayin when transcribing Arabic and Persian, but {ayin} would be fine here too. — kwami (talk) 19:18, 25 September 2022 (UTC)
