To correctly add a reference from a book, you should use this with a <at beginning and > on the end :-

ref>Miller, E: The Sun, page 34. Academic Press, 2005.</ref

Please put the correct details in next to the text the reference refers to, for example

from the book "Give it back"^[1]

This will create the number next to the text and put the reference in the reference section at the foot of the page
