Major improvements needed

edit
  • No, this article absolutely should NOT be deleted. It was a very acceptable Start-Class article, important to this WikiProject, until spurious edits appeared beginning in September 2007. This article should be reverted so it will reappear as it did on 8 April 2007 by User:Cydebot. (This is a request for an editor to do so.) Charvex 09:11, 20 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • I agree. It was mangled in a series of edits starting on 9-4-07 and appears to be unsalvageable in the current version as well as all the older versions in September. I'm reverting the article to the version of 2007-04-08 per Charvex. The article still needs reliable sources, but Jack Wrangler is notable. — Becksguy 09:26, 23 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • I replaced the prod tag, and two others, since they disappeared due to my reversion (although I removed messy article as a reason.) I didn't replace all the tags since there was some duplication. However, anyone is free to replace or add tags, of course. I'm not contesting the prod at this time, although the 5 day timer gets reset. That should be enough time to find sources. — Becksguy —Preceding signed but undated comment was added at 10:01, 23 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • I added three inline citations, including an autobiography published by St. Martin's Press, a well regarded publisher and a reference to his Broadway work. I think there is now enough to establish notability, although it does need more sources. The Prod nominator referred to WP:OR, and I can see his reasoning, so this does need clean up. However, needs improvement != needs deletion. Prod contested and prod tag removed today. Unencyclopedic tag also removed, but citation tag remains, as it should. — Becksguy 01:22, 28 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Jack Wrangler in newspaper advertisements in the late 70s & early 80s

edit

I recall that Jack Wrangler's name (and, often times, his picture) appeared in gay movie theater advertisements in mainstream newspapers virtually everyday for several years in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Perhaps an appropriate passage could be added to the article noting this fact. After all, his name was printed probably about 1,500 to 2,000 times in row in dozens (if not, hundreds) of newspapers in the United States. 71.168.134.197 (talk) 03:35, 8 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Infobox dates of marriage

edit

as is customary throughout wikipedia, through dates of marriage in the infobox do not denote the death of the person named. --emerson7 18:41, 14 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Such dates are not "customary" and if they were, that custom would have to change. Using a range of dates after a person's name will always be taken by some people as indicating life-span; to avoid misleading them, we cannot use such a range to indicate the duration of a marriage. We are here to inform, not mislead. Your help in this task would be appreciated. - Outerlimits (talk) 19:53, 14 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
it is the overwhelming standard in wikipedia to present spouse and marriage dates, and until now i've never heard of anyone being confused by the notation, and i don't see any reason to change the thousands of articles already using this convention. --emerson7 21:47, 14 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
No, it isn't "the overwhelming standard", and, as I said above - though you didn't reply to the point - it's to be avoided because it is prone to misinterpretation and is an unclear presentation of data. I've made several proposals that you've also ignore, insisting on your own unadorned "name (date-date)", which is a non-starter. The range must indicate exactly what it corresponds to: birth/death, regnal years, etc. Once we find an appropriate format you can stop reverting to your preferred version. - Outerlimits (talk) 06:19, 15 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
Years of marriage duration are standard in infoboxes of articles of people who have married; it gives the reader the vital information. There is no confusion, as the Personal life section states that the marriage began in 1994 and ended with his death. His widow's article, linked from this article, states she is alive. Schwulenbar (talk) 02:18, 26 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
A range of dates by a person's name is birth-death unless otherwise noted. There's no reason to present this data misleadingly, because, as you note, it appears correctly elsewhere. - Outerlimits (talk) 02:30, 26 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
It is otherwise noted; it is next to a marriage. No-one would think his widow was born in 1994! Schwulenbar (talk) 00:38, 23 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Personal life

edit

"In 1980, Wrangler, his step-grandmother, and his manager were attacked, pistol-whipped, and tied up by six burglars at his step-grandmother's home in Bel Air, California." That does not describe burglars; those were armed robbers. 193.93.181.66 (talk) 08:21, 5 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

They were simultaneously burglars and armed robbers. Schwulenbar (talk) 02:18, 26 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Use of non-free images

edit

This article has an image of Wrangler in the infobox. The use of another non-free image is appropriate only if the article includes extensive commentary about it. The simple statement "Among his more notable gay films were Kansas City Trucking Co., Hot House, Sex Machine, and A Night At The Adonis" does not warrant adding an image for any of those films. The fact an image might be deleted if it is orphaned is not sufficient reason to keep it in an article. The image I removed belongs in the infobox for Sex Machine, not here. LiteraryMaven (talkcontrib) 22:34, 10 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Agree that image is better on that article, it didn't seem to be there before ... -- Banjeboi 23:01, 10 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Bi?

edit

Last month, someone changed the Gay actors cat to Bisexual actors. The article does not make his orientation clear. He appeared in some straight scenes, and was married to a woman with whom he likely had a sex life. He identified as gay, but we only have to go by self-identification when the person is alive. Schwulenbar (talk) 00:38, 23 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Why not list all relevant categories? Wrangler is not homosexual or gay since he's at the very least sexually and romantically attracted to women since he wound up doing heterosexual porn and falling in love with a woman and marrying her. Everyone knows the "gay for pay" actors are really bisexual and so were the "straight for pay" actors in the 1970s and 1980s. 71.224.206.164 (talk) 03:40, 22 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
He's dead now, years later, and I'm going by self-identification just like, per WP:BLPCAT, we do for living people. Flyer22 (talk) 10:02, 24 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Height

edit

Jack Wrangler was known for his short stature, so he is most certainly not 5'10". I believe (but it needs to be verified) that he was 5'6" or 5'7". In any case, the infobox is wrong and should be fixed. Chuchunezumi (talk) 16:02, 23 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Robert Stillman

edit

In the blurb about Wrangler's father, Robert Stillman, there is a reference to a movie "Boots and Saddles." According to IMDB, there was no movie made in the 1950s by that name- there were three movies of that name, the last made in 1937. Mr. Stillman is associated with R. A. Cinander's televison series "Boots and Saddles." I have changed the section accordingly. DocKrin (talk) 12:21, 8 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
