Content

edit

Is there an audio clip of McLoughlin pronouncing his last name? [x] is not a common phone in English, so most English speakers would anglicize it to something else. I don't have access to the cited book, but this online version of the Longman dictionary lists several pronounciation variants. I recommend adding those in a footnote.

He pronounces his last name here [1], I added in the other pronunciation in a footnote. Shapeyness (talk) 11:59, 8 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

The signature image is cited to celebs.infoseemedia.com/jacksepticeye/jacksepticeyes-signature/, which seems like an unreliable content farm. Recommend finding a better source.

I couldn't find a better source so I removed it. Shapeyness (talk) 13:43, 8 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Is TenEighty Magazine reliable? From my cursory search, I don't see any WP:USEBYOTHERS, and lack a staff page. The about-us page does not provide any info about their editorial operations. One of the authors Natalie Orimber at least says they have a BA in journalism. I don't think its 100% unreliable, but it's iffy in BLP articles. Recommend reducing its usage.

I removed some usage where better sources are already being used - looks like there is some use by others documented here (BBC News and the Telegraph). Shapeyness (talk) 14:26, 9 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
True, though the use by others are mostly for opinions and not for statements of facts. I recommend removing whenever possible, but it's fine if you can't find anything other than the source. Ca talk to me! 23:56, 9 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

He has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Can you find a independent source discussing this?

I couldn't find an independent source although it is also mentioned in this interview [2]. I think it's ok to keep per WP:ABOUTSELF but I don't mind removing it either. Shapeyness (talk) 16:22, 9 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

McLoughlin claimed fellow YouTuber MrBeast had ruined YouTube by making it "more about views, money, and popularity than ... about having fun". Perhaps add context by including MrBeast's response and how the feud sizzled out.

Lead

edit

Is his tours really that notable to be in the lead? It's cited only to marginal sources like Tubefilter and TenEighty (see commentary above), and the body lacks detail about the tours.

I think it's worth keeping for the connection to the biographical film he released with the same name which got some more coverage. Shapeyness (talk) 17:00, 12 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

2nd most-subscribed Irish channel on YouTube I highly doubt this claim. Some YouTubers could be Irish and not have disclosed their nationality, and discussions have indicated that it is reliable for historical statistics and nothing else. See [3][4]. It is also not repeated in the body, so I recommend removal.

I removed it from the lead, but I added a small paragraph about McLoughlin previously being the most subscribed Irish YouTuber under the Media lists and income section because it is mentioned in a lot of RSes used in the article. Sadly I couldn't find a good source to say he has been overtaken (although apparently the channel that Social Blade ranks above McLoughlin is not even Irish from what I have seen). Shapeyness (talk) 13:00, 15 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Add the footnote about McLouglin's birth place in the infobox as well.

He is also an active philanthropist, participating in multiple fundraisers that have raised tens of millions for charitable organizations, for which he has received awards from organisations such as Save the Children and Junior Chamber International. Very long sentence. Recommend taking out "active" and "multiple" and splitting into two sentences.

I removed the second half of the sentence. Shapeyness (talk) 13:36, 8 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

His father worked for the ESB. Use full name of ESB for first occurance.

and is present in his YouTube logo Septic Eye Sam Does his YT logo have a name?

Yes, from the source "Not only is green a colour associated with Jacksepticeye through his ‘Septic Eye Sam’ logo ..." Shapeyness (talk) 14:32, 9 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
I have added an image which may help the reader to understand why the logo has a name, it is critically discussed in the article for its use of colour so there is a valid fair use justification too. Shapeyness (talk) 16:57, 9 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Recommend adding quotation marks to indicate it is a name since I was kind of confused reading that. Ca talk to me! 12:52, 14 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

The character originated from the fandom of Markiplier in response to a similar character on his channel called Darkiplier. This sentence is confusing.

Hopefully it is clearer now. Shapeyness (talk) 14:40, 9 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Recommend rming ventures from the header "Business ventures" since it is duplicated by a higher level header.

McLoughlin has been critical of the changing algorithms and policies at YouTube, voicing his dissatisfaction. Remove "voicing his dissatisfaction" as redundant.

so-called "gamer words" I think "so-called" should be removed with a explanation of what this euphemism actually refers to

I made some wording changes, hopefully slurs or "gamer words" is enough explanation. Shapeyness (talk) 14:51, 9 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
That reads better as an encyclopedia. 👍 Ca talk to me! 15:54, 15 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

I looked if Sean mentioned in "Death Notice of John (Johnny) Mcloughlin". RIP.ie. is the same Sean as in this article, and the details match.  Pass

Is AncestryDNA really reliable? According to https://doi.org/10.1080/15295036.2020.1767796, "the scientific community has frequently criticized the reliability and validity of direct-to-consumer ancestry DNA testing". Recommend taking out He is primarily of Irish and British descent, and possibly with some Iberian heritage.

Minor, but ...before becoming a carer for his grandmother. is 1 to 1 with source. "His mother did "everything under the sun" before becoming a carer for his grandmother."

This is quite hard to rephrase but hopefully this is ok before she became a care-giver for his grandmother Shapeyness (talk) 15:29, 9 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

privacy concerns after fans found his home in Athlone. All elements verified the two cited sources  Pass

McLoughlin was featured on the RTÉ 2 two-part documentary Ireland's Rich List as one of the "top 30 earners under the age of 30", leading to him receiving a wide coverage in the Irish media and a greater exposure to people in the country who had not seen his YouTube content The Ireland's Rich List is verified, and the wide coverage part is verified by the source "has been plastered across non-gaming media throughout the country." I don't have access to the Times, so does Times source verify greater exposure to people in the country who had not seen his YouTube content?

The main source for that was the Irish Independent:
Last week, a healthy television audience was introduced to Athlone native JackSepticEye
...
Since his appearance on RTE 2’s Rich List in the ‘30 under 30’ category, Athlone native Seán William McLoughlin (as his birth certificate calls him) has been plastered across non-gaming media throughout the country. What is surprising to those moderately invested in the gaming or YouTube scenes is how unknown JackSepticEye was in Ireland until his recent financial ‘outing’. Charlesworth 2018 for the color green seems good, source seems reliable enough for this purpose; Power 2021 supports the movie claim; Finnerty 2022 supports the Corrie claim; Hale 2018 supports the cloak claim; Press-Reynolds 2023 supports the tiktok claim; O'Reilly 2014 supports the PewDewPie shoutout claim; Charlesworth 2018 verifies the gothic storytelling claim.

Alexander 2018 is being used to support The video was among a wave of videos released at the time by various online content creators that focused on creator burnout and was praised by fellow YouTuber Shane Dawson who said that he had felt similar feelings., but doesn't say anything about a "wave", just that other YouTubers have made similar videos in the past.

With that part I was trying to summarise this part from the article, particularly the second sentence McLoughlin is one of several other creators, like Elle Mills and elrubiusOMG, to talk about mental health issues. More and more creators have come forward with stories about burnout or dealing with mental health issues. It could maybe be changed to "The video was released at a time in which there was an increased focus on burnout by other creators" to mirror the source more closely? Shapeyness (talk) 13:34, 15 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
I don't think the source is implying that discussions of burnout is becoming a specific movement or trend, but rather there are natural accumulating instances of YouTubers discussing burnout. Ca talk to me! 15:53, 15 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Onder 2023 seems good, but can you find an up-todate source to confirm that the comicbook actually ended up releasing in 22 November 2023?

Looks like it was actually released 4 December [5][6] - I fixed it in the article. Shapeyness (talk) 15:29, 15 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Misc

edit

Article is stable, no glaring NPOV problems, Earwig turns out fine, images licensed from original YT content and reputable uploaders. Article is broad, while staying relevant. All relevant sources mention Jacksepticeye, and the article do not digress too much. I will pass this article after doing more spotchecks. 👍

I think this article is ready and I will be passing this article after an experienced reviewer's approval; great work!
