Cross

edit

There is no reason to place the cross on this page; it is about an instrument not about a heraldic thingie. An argumented edit (edit summary) was automaitcally reverted. Arnoutf 17:22, 4 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Can you tell me where? I cannot find it accept in the see also section (which is not a reference). The comparison only holds for the black cross which is not the common depiction at all. Arnoutf 17:42, 4 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yes it is a good source; but I have never doubted the staff device was mentioned after the Saint (what's in a name after all). It does not say that it was named after the Cross of StJames, it may as well be named after him because of his function as protector of the pilgrim (who had to navigate) that the staff was named after him. Hence this line does not make the claim about the cross of StJames. Arnoutf 18:21, 4 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Significant changes.

edit

I've made some significant changes based on bits and pieces I've come across recently. Most of the changes are to re-organize the text so that things flow better with the additions.

It is possible that consideration should be given to splitting this page into two - one for surveying and another for astronomy and navigation. Jacob's staff is such a general term, it is overused in so many ways. Michael Daly 02:20, 1 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Tone sounds horrible

edit

Sounds like an 8th grader wrote it. Can we have more formal language here? "is used to refer to several things", "most staffs are much more complicated than that," and the first sentence of the first section could be rewritten. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2602:306:BCC4:3730:E926:95B0:7ECE:D801 (talk) 21:33, 22 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Grammar

edit

After reading your article I find it hard to be very encyclopedic. For one, I had to edit the name "Ben Gerson" to make sure it was capitalized as well as add in "also known as" in the first sentence you provided. My suggestion to really prove this article would be to include the use of bigger words so it doesn't sound like a child wrote it. And secondly, in regards to the description of the length markings of the pole, I advise to better depict the picture by including just how many of those markings the cross has. Other than that, I enjoyed learning about something new.
