Le Globe

I don't have time to follow up on this right now, but I think that at the time globe was the generic term for what came to be called a balloon, not the specific name of Charles's balloon. Awien (talk) 19:30, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

Here's an example: the caption of the contemporary illustration here: http://pagesperso-orange.fr/eventail/prov2.htm calls the balloon a globe aérostatique (not a balloon called "Le Globe"), while the fullest and most authoritative accounts of the flight (such as this one: http://ww2.ac-poitiers.fr/sc_phys/spip.php?article42&debut_page=5) don't give the balloon a name at all. What they do call balloons is Montgolfière after the Montgolfiers for a hot-air balloon, and Charlière after Charles for a hydrogen balloon. And the French Wikipédia Jacques Charles article in fact refers to the construction of a "ballon, appelé « globe » à l'époque", rather than saying the balloon was called Le Globe.
