Native American Perspective

I think this section could be pruned down significantly, now that we have a little distance from events. I suspect the lawsuits filed have all been dismissed. If it all amounted to a few activists filing nuisance lawsuits for publicity value, it can probably be dismissed in a few sentences. Brianyoumans (talk) 16:16, 19 November 2011 (UTC)

  • I still think the above. About the "weasel words" recently inserted (not by me) and removed: I think we need a source for the part about the ceremony being Native American intellectual property.Brianyoumans (talk) 21:40, 3 March 2017 (UTC)
Your assessment of the lawsuits as, "nuisance lawsuits for publicity value" is quite frankly shocking. The man killed people. The religious leaders of the cultures whose ceremonies he mimicked were horrified at what he did. The lawsuits by ceremonial people were an effort to set a legal precedent not only to protect intellectual property, but to save lives, as Ray is not the only appropriator who has killed people. So, no, I strongly disagree with your assessment here and do not agree with any attempt to minimize the coverage of what Ray did and what Natives have had to say about it. Especially now that Ray is attempting to relaunch his self-help career and has violated WP:COI to come here on WP and make the exact sort of edits you are suggesting. - CorbieV 22:39, 3 March 2017 (UTC)
It may be that the subject of Native Americans asserting intellectual property rights over ceremonies like this deserves its own article. The case against Ray was dismissed before trial, however. I guess I just think it is kind of tangential to the discussion of Ray. I also think some of the assertions in it are unsupported by the sources and need refs.Brianyoumans (talk) 17:26, 4 March 2017 (UTC)
