Later, in 1817, he was sent to the Columbia River to formally take over the Oregon Country for the United States, which was completed in 1818.

In 1818, the United States sloop Ontario, Capt. James Biddle, was sent to the mouth of Columbia River. He returned without having anchored. This is the only visit of a public vessel to that coast. (Have source) Brother Officer 07:30, 29 November 2006 (UTC)--Reply
