Please change "dentist" visit to "dental" visit near the end... I have just removed a ridiculous line on the biography saying that "JAMES BROWN IS NOT DEAD".The Chicken 02:51, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

Whistle Register

Removed silly remark from article:

It is unclear how much of James Brown's musical genius is his own and how much comes from the minds and souls of his musicians

Ortolan88

There are a variety of types of Genius. Like Miles Davis, George Clinton and Count Basie, James Brown's greatest genius lies in his ability to lead successful groups that create great music.

Many a tech startup company has a cornucopia of technical genius yet still fails due to lack of business genius.

Different topic: I'd like to see some discussion of James Brown's personal life. He has had some run ins with the law. When and where? 63.249.85.92 05:31, 21 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Seminal?!

Why are we using the word Seminal, refer to first paragraph, when it is to do with the semen system of the reproductive system.

See this url: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/seminal . The second and third meanings of the word are operative here. Verne Equinox 18:24, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

First career?

Wasn't James Brown trained as an optical physicist who later turned to music after being seriously discredited?

No. -Slugokramer
Why so? Why not? Hyacinth 00:03, 31 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Address Cleanup Request

Quite a chore, but I'm a fan so it wasn't too bad. Tried to keep all the facts intact, added a couple (IE - cameo in Rocky) - believe it can be considered 'cleaned up.' Barrettmagic 16:06, 28 July 2005 (UTC)

Redirect proposal

Out of 115 "What links here" for James Brown, all but 3 needed to be directed to James Brown (musician). I propose that James Brown redirect to James Brown (musician).

Native American descent

Am I confused or isn't James Brown part Native American (mots specifically, Cherokee) ?--Mrbluesky 14:36, 1 February 2006 (UTC)

Almost all Black people from Georgia and South Carolina have some Native American ancestry. I wouldn't categorize him, however, if he doesn't directly claim it. --FuriousFreddy 13:31, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

That's probably an exaggeration. More like a significant minority of black people.→ R Young {yakłtalk} 15:14, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

Granted, but Brown is quoted in the Wikipedia “Cherokee” article. To be honest, I don’t know what we should do, though.Mrbluesky 21:31, 2 June 2006 (UTC)

I would agree with FuriousFreddy that most African Americans in South Carolina have some Native American (usually Cherokee, Catawba, Santee, Edisto, Chicora, Waccamaw, and other smaller nations) in them. (There was a point in the early days of slavery when 1/3 of slaves in SC were Native American, and there was a lot of intermarriage; material culture of the time confirms that many customs and traditions blended as well in that period - for example, "colonoware", for anyone who is interested.) However, since geneaology and family records were rarely kept for slaves (or anyone other than the ruling class, for that matter), most people cannot really trace it back and don't bother to claim it. I don't know about James Brown's case; I tend to agree that if he himself identified that way, it should be included; otherwise not. Race/ethnicity can often be a very a difficult thing to define around here (SC/GA); it seems to be best to let people self-identify. Tuckerma 14:58, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

Eyebrows

It seems fairly well-known that his eyebrows are tattoos. Does anyone know how he lost them? I'd like to add it as a footnote to the new eyebrow fact I added. - Darkhawk

I don't think he lost them, he just got tired of dyeing them black. --62.255.232.16 04:38, 29 March 2006 (UTC)
According to Jane & Michael Stern's Encyclopedia of Pop Culture, "He was released [from prison] on February 27, 1991, and two days later he flew to Los Angeles to have eyebrows tattooed on his forehead (his natural ones had fallen out from too much boxing as a youth) and eye liner tattooed on his lower lids." (p.74) However, a few other articles in the book contain demonstrable factual errors, so I don't know how reliable this claim is. Just in case anyone still cares. Hip-Hop

The introduction mentions his influence on hip-hop. Seems like there should be a section elaborating this. It is not mentioned, for example, how frequently his songs were sampled in hip-hop songs. I'm not really the expert on this though.

Xzqx 16:39, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

For that way as well, how about his heavy cameo on the Black Eyed Peas' album, Monkey Business, the song "They don't Want Music" is pretty much all him.

He was a good man

Sampled

James Brown is surely the most sampled artist of all time. Shouldn't there be a section dealing with this? Jhamez84 21:52, 21 October 2006 (UTC)

"Genius of Love"

James Brown is certainly mentioned in the Tom Tom Club's song, Genius of Love, but he is not "the" subject. In fact, the Genius of Love in question is plainly pointed out in the song as Smokey Robinson. Bootsy Collins and Hamilton Bohannon get shout-outs in the song also, so James Brown cannot really be called "the" subject of the song. --Misterdoe 16:45, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

Death

According to the current edit, James Brown died on October 23, 2006. Where's the source of the information? I found NONE AT ALL.

He died this morning. His Web site still lists tour dates beginning this week and running through 2007. Revolute 11:51, 25 December 2006 (UTC)

Just because.

Thought I'd mention here simply because I doubt they belong in trivia, the 80's garage punk band The Dead Milkmen did a song in the style of James Brown and hinting at his spousal abuse, called RC's Mom. A sample of the lyrics:

I'm gonna beat my wife

Gonna smack her with a lead pipe

Gonna smack her with a 2x4

Chase her down with a lawn mower

Good God, y'all!

J.G. Thirlwell, a.k.a. Foetus, released a song vaguely commenting on James Brown's prison term, titled "Free James Brown (So He Can Run Me Down)"

Finally, recently Mr. Brown's wife was in the news, trying to beat the legal system by claiming diplomatic immunity due to her being married to the "Ambassador of Funk". Heh.

The following addition (by 71.137.27.71): http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=James_Brown&diff=95250323&oldid=95191527 looks like a contribution to a discussion not part of an article, so I took the liberty to move it here:

Removing Vandalism

There is a long line on infinite "LOLOLOLOLLOLOLOLOLLOLOLOLOLLOLOLOLOL" before the table contents. I'm removing it. -- WiiVolve 08:39, 25 December 2006 (UTC)

And this warrants a mention in the discuss article because...? -- GIR 10:37, 25 December 2006 (UTC)

Sometimes, people don't know where to note that vandalism has happened. GIR maybe you can post the appropriate instructions for those of us that don't know? That would be helpful. Roaming27 21:25, 25 December 2006 (UTC)

Movie Roles

I didn't see the Blues Brothers or Blues Brothers 2000 Movies mentioned anywhere in this article, in both of which James Brown played a key role as the Reverend Cleophus James... am I blind?

-- edit missed it... the italics made it harder for me to see... I am trually blind.

YOU SHOULD ALSO PUT UP HIS APPEARANCE HE MADE IN THE MOVIE UNDERCOVER BROTHER...

'Leila' with Hakim (2004)

Seldom is mentioned the recording 'Leila' (Lela/Laila) he made with the Egyptian singer Hakim.

Why is this ?

Cause of death

Today I have seen several news reports stating that James Brown died from congestive heart failure. The earlier reports had said he died from pneumonia. I had already added the Category: Deaths by pneumonia before learning this. I think I'll wait a few days until the dust settles to revisit it. -- Michael David 17:58, 25 December 2006 (UTC)

DISREGARD ALL OF THIS - I just got caught up. (Ain't senility grand!?) -- Michael David 18:09, 25 December 2006 (UTC)

Suggestion

Shouldn't the current event template be placed on the article, because the death is a current event? Also, shouldn't there be that one template which tells people that this is a talk pagem not a discussion about the death. I would do it myself, but guests can't edit this article, and because I don't know the template for the latter one. Thanks. -Anonymous

Cold Sweat

It has chord changes or it doesn't? Rhetorical answer: It has a chord change. The bomb almost exploded, I almost had a heart attack, I nearly died, George Bush won the election, etc,....

Okay, I fixed this. InnocuousPseudonym 21:55, 25 December 2006 (UTC)

James Brown influence/songs

80.195.254.5 19:02, 25 December 2006 (UTC)Ned French several songs not mentioned in the context of his social activism: King Herion - brilliant lyric rapped and rhymed - the first real rap? Stay in School (Don't be a dropout) - a cracking upbeat number

Also it was not mentioned that the Governor of Georgia (or Alabama was it?) asked him to come out on the streets to calm an angry mob the night of Martin Luther Kings's assisination. He did and avoided a riot.

A troubled genius no doubt but his message can ill afford to be ignored by black leaders today.
