The lines of verse on the SAS clock tower:

We are the Pilgrims, master; we shall go
Always a little further: it may be
Beyond the last blue mountain barred with snow,
Across that angry or that glimmering sea,

What does "SAS" stand for here? Goochelaar (talk) 22:40, 17 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Regarding the text that the Anthony Powell character is "fond of intoning", my own copy of Hassan reads For lust of knowing what should not be known / We take the Golden Road to Samarkand where "known" in the above rhymes with "alone" two lines earlier.

I am not sure if the current, differing text in this Wikipaedia article, i.e. "what we should not know" represents an error made by Anthony Powell, or by the author of this Wiki article, or possibly Anthony Powell deliberately making his character mis-quote the text from Hassan. "what we should not know" does appear in Powell's book, so it is quoted correctly in the article. However, whether it was deliberately or mistakenly mis-quoted by Powell is a moot point. Hohenloh + 13:13, 16 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
