A hind's daughter - what is a hind?
editWhile I'm aware of two meanings for hind: hindmost or deer; what is the 'hind' referred to in this painting? A type of servant? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.168.119.84 (talk) 02:28, 12 January 2020 (UTC)
- According to Wiktionary it is a Scots word meaning "A skilled labourer on a farm, especially a ploughman. In Southern Scotland, specifically a married skilled farmworker given housing in a cottage and often given special privileges in addition to his wages. Occasionally a derogatory term". The OED has it in this sense, as does Chambers 20th Century Dictionary, and my Collins English Gem Dictionary. DuncanHill (talk) 02:34, 12 January 2020 (UTC)
