editThis page should have more about his violent methods of contolling Navajos. Shoot to kill order? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.95.34.92 (talk) 21:18, 13 July 2008 (UTC)
- That material is from this source which is sub-standard for Wikipedia purposes]. Note that even in that, the order related to Apaches, not to Navajo. Such orders were given during the Indian Wars, by other officers, in other theaters, but certainly not with respect to the Navajo during the campaign Carleton commanded. Thousands of Navajo men were delivered alive to Bosque Redondo. User:Fred Bauder Talk 15:08, 8 March 2011 (UTC)
Carleton's administration of New Mexico and Arizona were also controversial. He tended to ignore civil courts and acted as the supreme authority within his department. That said, he was a successful commander in his time and place.Intothatdarkness (talk) 21:00, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

Mescalero Campaign.
editThere's a lot wrong with this. Mangas was NOT a Mescalero, he was a Warm Springs Apache. The whole thing about Mangas being killed at Ft. McLane has absolutely nothing to do with this article. The "kill letter" Carleton issued to Carson was NOT followed, either. This is a very bad article. 2601:8C1:8581:58E0:715E:D42B:41ED:9D9B (talk) 16:35, 14 March 2022 (UTC)
