Talk:James O'Shea/archive
James O'Shea is also the name of an actor
editJames O'Shea is also the name of an actor and shouldn't be confused with the Irish soccer player. However, I am unsure as to whether or not James O'Shea the actor meets notability standards for an article of his own.-- Avazina, (Talk to me) DEMs are morons. 15:18, 19 October 2010 (UTC)
There are two notable persons called "James O'Shea": the Victorian sculptor of the firm O'Shea and Whellan and the Irish footballer who is better known as Jay O'Shea, but James is his real name. Obviously most people who type "James O'Shea" will be looking for for the footballer rather than the Victorian sculptor, so that is the redirect, with a hatnote linking to the article on the sculptor and his masonry firm. I have no idea why an actor who does not have an article should be relevant. Paul B (talk) 15:30, 19 October 2010 (UTC)
- Since there is more than one then there should be a dis-ambiguous page for that.-- Avazina, (Talk to me) DEMs are morons. 15:40, 19 October 2010 (UTC)

candidate. As it stands, James O'Shea is a plausible search term for the Irish footballer. It's his real name and he's often referred to by it. Until there's an article about anyone else of that name, there's no need to make it more difficult for the reader looking for the article about the footballer. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 15:37, 19 October 2010 (UTC) - Still it shouldn't be the sole re-direct for one person since there are more than one.-- Avazina, (Talk to me) DEMs are morons. 15:42, 19 October 2010 (UTC)
- That's not how it's done. Please see WP:DAB#Disambiguation page or disambiguation links? We don't make disambiguation pages just because other people of the same name exist, we wait until there are generally more than two persons of the same name with articles. As it stands, there is only one article about a person called James O'Shea, and one about the masonry firm in which the sculptor worked, so the current arrangements are correct. I'll undo your change. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 15:57, 19 October 2010 (UTC)
- What do you mean that isn't how it's done, when I have come across many such pages for articles with the same name? I don't understand, the page as I set it up (as I have seen many others) is meant to avoid confusion.-- Avazina, (Talk to me) DEMs are morons. 16:02, 19 October 2010 (UTC)
- For articles with the same name, yes. But at the moment, there is only one article about a person called James O'Shea. When more Wikipedia articles exist about people called James O'Shea, we'll need a disambiguation page. Until there are, we don't. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 16:06, 19 October 2010 (UTC)
- Even if there was a stand alone article on the sculptor, we would probably still redirect to the footballer. If one person is overhelmingly more important/popular then name redirects go straight to that person. Thus Obama redirects to Barack Obama and (comparisons apart) Hitler redirects to Adolf Hitler, despite the fact that there are other people with articles called Obama and Hitler.
