Playing position for the national team?

edit

The national football federation in Denmark, has categorized him as a midfielder in their database. In my opinion, the wiki article however need to describe his exact role and position on the field, when he played for the national team. I dont know whether or not he played at various positions during his career, but in any case, I think the info should still be included in the article. According to this reference (at page 20), he played as a left wingback in 1989. The reference moreover claim, that Denmark at that point of time played most of the matches with:

  • 4 man defense: Jan Heintze (left back), Kent Nielsen (centre back), Lars Olsen (centre back) and John Sivebæk (right back).
  • 3 defensive midfielders: Morten Olsen, John Faxe Jensen, and John Larsen
  • 1 left wingback: Jan Bartram
  • 2 strikers: Flemming Poulsen and Brian Laudrup

To be frank, this info above make me a little bit confused, about the formation Denmark preferred to play in 1989, and in what exact position Jan Bartram actualy played. Perhaps the reference I found, made a small mistake to desribe him as left wingback? To me it seems like, it would be more correct and accurate to describe him as a "left midfielder" rather than a "left wingback", as Denmark already had Jan Heintze employed at the "left back" position. I would appreciate if any of you can either confirm my theory, or otherwise help to clarify in what position Jan Bartram normaly played. Danish Expert (talk) 16:18, 17 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

After a further check of the official start squads in the international matches played by Jan Bartram, it seems evident that he played as a left back in the 6 Olympic qualifiers in 1987-88, and then for the remaining part of his important matches in 1988-91 (6 World Cup qualifiers and 4 Euro qualifiers), he was instead used as a left midfielder. The start squads only provide this info indirectly, meaning that it is not a written fact, but something I assume when looking at the names selected for the squads. The start squads in the database have always been listed by DBU in the order of: GK, DF, MF, CF. So when Jan Bartram is listed further down than the first 5 names (and/or its possible to identify two other players who normaly played as a left/right back in his career), I think its safe to assume, that Jan Bartram then played as a left midfielder in those games. I would however still appreciate, if some of you can add a source for this info, or just confirm if my assumption is correct. Danish Expert (talk) 17:35, 17 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
