I am curious to know how a Belgian becomes the "foremost authority on the history of the peoples of Central Africa." Vansina supports the work of Danielle de Lame, among others, whose writings serve as veiled apologies for Belgium's role in the Rwanda genocide. Historically, Vansina may have partnered with Alex Haley and perhaps possesses a great breadth of anthropological information about Africa, but the lens through which he views the participation of Europe (his perspective) in this colonial narrative remains questionable. Therefore, I believe this moniker "foremost authority" depends greatly on one's point of view. What makes an "authority"?
