Last name pronunciation

 – Proper pronunciation given w/ WP:IPA for German link.

Someone put a dubious on her last name pronunciation. Please see her own pronunciation at http://library.cuetable.com/showthread.php?t=2562 .--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 04:35, 12 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

I think that was me (if not, I was thinking about it). The issue I meant to raise here but apparently got sidetracked from and never did, was that she was likely Anglicizing her name for the English-speaking audience when being interviewed for English-language television. It is very common for speakers of one language to blur over subtleties of their own name pronunciation when dealing with speakers of another language, when the person in question already has knowledge that her/his name is not going to be properly parsed by those other people, and in what direction the error[s] will lie. E.g., I tell (aurally, I mean) native Spanish speakers that my name is "Estánton" (with Spanish vowel and consonant pronunciation, or at least my gringo approximation of it) rather than "Stanton" the way I'd normally pronounce it, because I know their language is not geared for initial-st constructions, the glottal stop that replaces in the "-nto-" part of my name in many American and some other English-language dialects, and so on. Similarly Arnold Schwartzenegger long ago stopped trying to get Americans to pronounce his name as "Ah-nolt Schvahts-en-egg-ah", the way a German-speaker would. I no longer have an issue with this article, as the proper German pronunciation is given with a link to WP:IPA for German. — SMcCandlish Talk⇒ ʕ(Õلō Contribs. 00:26, 15 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
