Notability

ignoring the current stuff connected with his running for office, there's enough here from which to build an article. I've declined. Suggest AfD if someone thinks it wouldn't pass. TravellingCarithe Busy Bee 19:32, 9 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
As the Republican nominee in a strongly Republican district, it's almost certain that Chaffetz will be elected in November to Congress. Not to mention all the news stories about his win in the June primary - it's clear that he's notable, now. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 12:48, 25 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Changes

While it is true that Jason was a democrat, I find it confusing to list that in the box showing his current status. He helped Jon Huntsman, Jr. succeed in becoming Gov. of Utah as a Republican. He is a member of and running as the GOP candidate. --Archf 1 (talk) 05:33, 1 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

What's with that awful low-res photo of Rep. Chaffetz? Surely there's a better picture? --MicahBrwn (talk) 22:42, 10 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Chaffetz grew up as a Jew

There are multiple references that state this.Johnpacklambert (talk) 03:07, 30 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Is he Sephardic? His last name is reminiscent of how one might have pronounced Chavez in old Spanish. Just curious if there was a way to find this out. Thank you. 71.57.186.90 (talk) 03:23, 9 October 2011 (UTC) Tom in FloridaReply

The Chaffetz ancestors were Eastern European Jews, but Peggy Chaffetz was not Jewish and John Chaffetz did not practice. Jason Chaffetz grew up in an agnostic household.Js UT03 (talk) 20:12, 19 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunate wording

edit

"The images have come under intense scrutiny from privacy groups..."

Oh, my, my, my. That has got to take some kind of prize for most unfortunate wording in a Wikipedia article. Yaush (talk) 21:16, 17 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Early Life and Education

edit

The entire paragraph is a bit off. Usually the parents' names are front and center. Not here. What is his father's name? I had to go to Kitty Dukakis' page to find that out. What is his mother's name?:

Chaffetz was born in Los Gatos, California to XXXX (née XXXX) and John Chaffertz.

I've added the father's name. No source I could find mentioned the mother's name. --NeilN talk to me 21:31, 13 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Well, she moved back to Boston (home of the Mother Church of Christian Science), then married a rising Democratic politician (and before the Internet, that wasn't researched ON the Internet, sit might not get into the Internet; so, if it's in print from before that time, research it the old-fashioned way!). Article needs to make it clear that he and John Dukakis have the same biological father. This is clarified on Dukakis page, but here it is unclear why they would be 1/2 brothers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.171.132.166 (talk) 19:27, 17 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Planned Parenthood Hearing

edit

I would like to add a new section to the tenure portion of this article about his chairing of the recent hearing about Planned Parenthood, and his gaff in his usage of a chart that was very quickly determined to be from an anti-abortion group. It didn't even have a y-axis. I made an attempt to add it in but it was removed despite being well sourced (at least in my view). Is there a reason for opposition to this? Or should I just beef up the citations (as there are many available) and just add it back in? Immortal Horrors or Everlasting Splendors 22:06, 5 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

media matters provides several reliable sources that can beef it up. It's well sourced.73.194.148.15 (talk) 22:56, 5 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Born Jewish?

edit

The Forward article appears to be incorrect, and is not sourced. If Chaffetz' mother was a Christian Scientist who converted to Mormonism, Chaffetz would not be considered Jewish unless he converted to Judaism at some point (or his mother was born Jewish or converted to Judaism before his birth, which is not mentioned anywhere). It appears he grew up in an agnostic household. Therefore, the statement that he converted from Judaism to Mormonism is incorrect. МандичкаYO 😜 04:11, 13 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I found a 2015 Los Angeles Times article ([2]) that makes the same statement about Chaffetz's being raised Jewish, apparently based on a 2013 interview with Michael Dukakis (the article says that Dukakis, in that interview, talked about his "long-standing relationship with Chaffetz"). So I have added that reference and removed the "dubious" flag - I hope that's ok. There may be discrepancies between what is traditionally true and what families do in practice. For example, this 2011 article from JTA talks about such a situation of children being raised Jewish despite having a non-Jewish mother who does not convert: [3]. Also, the Jewish Virtual Library article on "Patrilineal descent" indicates that Reform Judaism takes a different view than traditional Jewish law: [4]. Not sure the lede really adheres to NPOV

edit

There's a lot of information there about criticism he's received that's appropriate to talk about in the body of the article, but maybe not in the lede. Especially since a lot of it is recent. --Jprg1966 (talk) 23:19, 20 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Resignation from the House

edit

This is a call for help editing the article that will document the special election to determine Chaffetz's successor. Draft:Utah's 3rd congressional district special election, 2017 will be the page and we can move the page to a full article once Chaffetz has resigned.
