Boundaries
editThere are 18 villages and 18 hamlets within the Town of Oyster Bay. The U.S. Post Office has organized these 36 places into 30 different 5-digit ZIP codes. Obviously the boundaries of hamlets and ZIP codes cannot be the same. CDPs boundaries can and do change from one census to the next. There should be no expectation at all of any commonality between boundaries of hamlets, CDPs and ZIP codes -- nor school districts or fire districts. Villages are another matter, as the census bureau seems to attempt to observe their boundaries. Unfortunately, because statistics are readily available for the CDPs [and not so much for hamlets & school districts & ZIP codes], wikipedians have chosen to make the articles about the short-lived CDPs. --JimWae (talk) 18:17, 24 September 2009 (UTC)
- Well, there should be some expectation of commonality (in terms of overlapping area), but different boundaries. I agree that the Wikipedia article should focus on the Hamlet, not the zip code, CDP, fire district, or anything else (I think some school district articles exist on WP though). I thought of removing the CDP map, but the CDP map is a standard feature of every village, town, hamlet, etc article, and I figured there's a larger project group that makes those decisions. I undid an earlier edit because it contradicted the that map (and it was unsourced and gramatically poor), and I couldn't find any maps online that show the actual hamlet boundary. When I get a chance, I'll consult my printed Hagstrom map (I think that might show hamlet boundaries) and revise the article if needed. -Sme3 (talk) 19:05, 24 September 2009 (UTC)
There's overlapping & usage of the same name - that's about it. In fact, HAMLETS are local fictions - they have no official boundaries at all, and serve absolutely no administrative function. Hamlets are portions of towns that have never incorporated as a village (thus have no village council), and are governed & administered by the town. Postal ZIPs, school, library, fire, and water districts (all of which serve adminstrative functions) all DO have official boundaries - but they almost always (especially on LI) overlap with what are generally perceived to be other hamlets. CDPs have official boundaries - but those boundaries can & do change from one census to the next. Statistics for a CDP are arranged for the purpose of organizing voting districts (one person- one vote), but cannot be used to compare "hamlets"--JimWae (talk) 19:44, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
We might consider a "hamlet" completely surrounded by villages to have a clear boundary - however, hamlets have NO legal status, hence no official status. Though the boundary is clear, it is not in any way official, as the "hamlet" does not exist as an official entity--JimWae (talk) 19:47, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
