Doesn't make sense

edit

I don't understand this line: "In what could, but didn't, turn out to be his last regular season game in the NFL, Bettis rushed for 41 yards and three touchdowns against the Detroit Lions in week 17 of the 2005 NFL season." Week 17 was the last regular season game. What other regular-season game has The Bus played since then? -- Mikeblas 23:45, 8 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

No clue. Obviously the person that added that had no clue what he/she was talking about.
I think they misread the sentence as "last game", period. TaintedMustard 04:50, 6 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Asthma

edit

Should we add that Bettis suffered from asthma as a child and still does to some extent?

Parents

edit

Bettis' parents have never missed a game of his. Is this addable?

Bettis is a very good bowler... should this be added?

  • Yeah, any info should be I guess

Retirement

edit

Fixing something in there. Jerome Bettis officially announced his retirement as he was standing there on the podium, he didn't say it was a possibility.

Picture

edit

I think we should get another picture in there–either one of him in action during a game or a Super Bowl postgame picture would be good.–Clpalmore, 5 Feb. 2006

  • I have a picture of him playing while he was at UND. Add it?
  • Go to [[1]] and click the picture entitled The Bus Stops Here. I say that is the best picture to use. Bio2590 06:01, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, the "Bus Stops Here" picture looks like a good one. I actually don't know how to add a picture, so if someone wants to do it, feel free. Otherwise, I'll try to figure it out.–Clpalmore 5:35, 15 February 2006 (UTC)

That image is almost certainly copyrighted by the NFL, so we won't be able to use it on Wikipedia. Microtonal 05:53, 15 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Trivia

edit

The bits about asthma and bowling don't really belong in the intro paragraph, and it seems like overkill to have a whole section just to say that his parents have only missed two of his games. I'm thinking that the "parents" section should be retitled as "trivia", and those three bits of info (all of which certainly belong in the article, of course) should be moved there. Thoughts? Microtonal 20:16, 9 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

You're right about the bowling really, but the asthma is a part of what he is, so generally I'd say that it should stay there-Bio2590 23:37, 9 February 2006 (UTC)
I agree that asthma is "a part of what he is", but I don't think that it needs to be the second thing we have to say about him. I doubt that Bettis thinks that asthma is the second most important thing in his life, so I'm a bit uncomfortable with the implications of prominence that its current placement creates. Duel with Martin

edit

I'm wondering what others thoughts would be on adding a section discussing his duel with Curtis Martin during the 2004 season, as they both climbed the all-time rushing list. I've already put together some text for it(and will include that text here), and while their "duel" seems like a good fit for the trivia section, it's a bit too long for a normal trivia entry. thoughts? my sample entry follows

"During the 2004 season, Bettis and New York jets Running Back, Curtis Martin dueled for the position on the all-time rushing yards leaderboard. Bettis entered the season 684 yards ahead of Martin, due to Bettis being the backup in Pittsburgh for much of the season, Martin was able to pass Bettis in week 13 until the Steelers played their game later in the day and Bettis retook the lead by 6 yards. When the Jets traveled to Martin's home town of Pittsburgh to play the Steelers the following week, both backs would cross the 13,000 yard mark, making this the first time this has happened. Their combined totals were also one of the biggest combined totals for opposing running backs in history. At the end of the game, Martin would lead Bettis by 9 yards. Two weeks later in week 16, Bettis would again pass martin, and establish himself with a lead of 81 yards, and in doing so, surpassed Eric Dickerson for 4th on the all-time list. Bettis sat out the final week of the season, and when Martin rushed for 153 yards that week, he passed Dickerson and Bettis for the final time." Pelzo 03:35, 7 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

"Battering Ram" Jerome Bettis

edit

I added a short blurb that he was called the Battering Ram while playing for the Rams. I believe that Jackie Slater was the one who gave him this nickname during the preseason. I don't know which year it was. I also don't have a reference for this, so I didn't put it in the blurb. I read this somewhere while the Rams were still in LA in a LA Ram newspaper. (I can't remember the name of it off hand.) --Pinkkeith 17:31, 18 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

The above is correct regarding Bettis's nickname while with the Rams. I always remember him being called "The Battering Ram" in his early years, and I'm fairly certain that he didn't receive the nickname "The Bus" until he arrived in Pittsburgh. Unless someone has a source that indicates Bettis was called "The Bus" while in Los Angeles, that reference in the second paragraph should be corrected. -- Trowbridge (talk) 22:22, 27 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

College Career

edit

Shouldn't there be more information on his pre-NFL days? I feel like this is a significant part of his life.

I went back to the archives and resuscitated statements that had been written about his high school and college career. Odd that this had gotten clobbered. I find it even more odd that it had remained clobbered for so long. I expect that there was some explanation given, but whatever it might have been, I did not find it.--Vybr8 (talk) 04:43, 9 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Quotes

edit

The quote, "Once in a blue moon I fumble the football, and once in a blue moon Ben [Roethlisberger] makes that tackle," seems to be misattributed.

Ben Roethlisberger said something very similar. "Once in a blue moon, Jerome fumbles. Once in a blue moon, I'm going to make a tackle." http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/chronicle/archive/2006/01/20/SPGECGQDMF1.DTL Unless there is evidence Jerome Bettis said almost the same thing, This quote should be removed or attributed properly.

Nicknames

edit

There are so many nicknames mentioned in this article - none are sourced. The only "common knowledge" one that I am aware of is The Bus. Can we source some of the other nicknames (even just a mention in a sports article)? I'd almost suggest a separate section for nicknames just to get them out of the important, more encyclopedic parts of the article. I did remove one nickname mentioned in the intro; it doesn't belong there unless it's a notable nickname (i.e. Bus). More general clean-up is needed too. --Midnightdreary 17:33, 25 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Republican

edit

Now, it is known that Bettis did support Bush, and Obama... This article lists him as a Republican, and I could use some verification on that, as I saw on a Pennsylvania voters site that he was an inactive Democrat... (I double checked my stas, and it did get them right) So, I'm wondering if he changed affiliation or whether that check was incorrect. --User:Lawrence142002

He is not the oldest child. He is the youngest. 2600:1702:1950:4170:E169:B365:920F:A82F (talk) 01:35, 22 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
