"Criticism" section, fact corrections

Hi, I'd like to request that this article be rewritten to incorporate the information from the “Criticism” section into the rest of the article. I believe having a separate “Criticism” section is undermining the NPOV of the article, per WP:NPOV. I'm asking here rather than making the edit myself because I have a conflict of interest, as I work for a communications agency that has Mr. Yang as a client.

The simplest route is likely to flesh out the “career” section and divide it into different phases of Yang’s career, e.g. “Founding of Yahoo!” et al. If desired, I'd be happy to take a stab at writing the new draft myself for someone else to review and implement.

Additionally, a few fact corrections can be made in the article:

  • Since leaving Yahoo, Yang has been running private investment firm AME Cloud Ventures in Palo Alto. (per Forbes)
  • Yang's birth name was Chih-Yuan (not Yuang). (per Forbes)
  • Jerry and David's Guide to the World Wide Web was created in January 1994 (not February). (per Forbes)
  • Yang has served on the board for Workday, Inc., since November 2013. (per Bloomberg)
  • Yang departed from Cisco’s board in November 2012. (per Bloomberg)

Many thanks to whoever can take a look at these suggestions and let me know what you think. Mary Gaulke (talk) 02:41, 5 December 2014 (UTC) (added request edit tag Mary Gaulke (talk) 14:56, 8 December 2014 (UTC))

i fixed the factual stuff. Jytdog (talk) 04:20, 12 December 2014 (UTC)
Thanks a bunch! Do you have any feedback on how to address the "Criticism" section? Would it be helpful if I drafted up a reorganization of the page in my sandbox? I appreciate any advice or input you can offer. Mary Gaulke (talk) 14:38, 12 December 2014 (UTC)
sure you can prepare a draft. There are grounds to incorporate the criticism into the narrative based on Wikipedia:Criticism#Avoid_sections_and_articles_focusing_on_criticisms_or_controversies. And for what its worth, I recommend that you do not omit bad stuff that is reliably sourced; this cannot be a whitewash. You can make arguments to leave stuff out based on WP:UNDUE but things cannot be left out just to make Yang look better. And no puffery. We are not here for promotion. I am telling you all that so that you can use your time as productively as possible, and I don't know how much experience you have with Wikipedia. Good luck! Jytdog (talk) 14:57, 12 December 2014 (UTC)
If you have specific factual corrections, bring those up. Those will get fixed. But in general, new drafts by paid editors are not well received on Wikipedia. John Nagle (talk) 06:28, 13 December 2014 (UTC)
Thanks to you both for the feedback, and my apologies for the delayed response. I appreciate hearing your concerns and invite you both to check out the draft I've prepared here. I tried to leave detailed edit summaries, but briefly, I did make a point of retaining all sourced criticism and trying to avoid promotional language. I made a few minor copy edits and, as I proposed above, broke the "Career" section down into subsections and incorporated the content from the "Controversies" section therein. I also added some information with citations on Yahoo's investment in Alibaba, AME Cloud Ventures, and exhibitions of Yang's calligraphy collection. Finally, I revised the board seat dates for accuracy with additional citations as necessary. I would really appreciate hearing your feedback and am open to making further edits to this draft per your suggestions. Thanks again! Mary Gaulke (talk) 19:34, 7 January 2015 (UTC)

Done I did a lot of my own editing. I implemented the idea of integrating the criticism, and I copy/pasted the alibaba stuff. Otherwise that was all me. Jytdog (talk) 06:02, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

puffery

Hi Poohlalong sorry to revert you twice. please keep puffery out of Wikipedia, per WP:NPOV and WP:PROMO and please do follow WP:EAD. Sorry again. Jytdog (talk) 03:32, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

Additions to "Philanthropy" section

Hi, I have a few additional citations for the "Philanthropy" section of the article if someone would be willing to take a look and consider adding them. Again, not making edits myself due to a COI - I work for a communications agency for which Mr. Yang is a client. Thanks so much for your time!

Mary Gaulke (talk) 22:00, 30 January 2015 (UTC)

Please provide sources that are independent of each of Yang and the subject organization, to show that any one of those is noteworthy. Please don't waste our time with this kind of self-published or press-released-based crap in the future. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not social media, and not a vehicle for promoting something. Next time I will not bother replying. Jytdog (talk) 01:11, 31 January 2015 (UTC)
Hi Jytdog, thanks for taking the time to reply and please accept my apologies. You're right that I neglected to demonstrate notability and that's completely unhelpful. It was an honest mistake and not one I plan to make twice. My primary goals as a COI editor are not just to help my clients but also to make Wikipedia a better encyclopedia, and I'm sorry I messed that up this time. Thanks again for all your help. Mary Gaulke (talk) 13:43, 3 February 2015 (UTC)
great, thanks! there is a learning curve and lots of people have misconceptions about Wikipedia. :) Jytdog (talk) 14:11, 3 February 2015 (UTC)

Please correct. Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 159.220.74.4 (talk) 13:31, 24 November 2015 (UTC)

Jerry Yang (entrepreneur)Jerry YangWP:PRIMARYTOPIC, this Jerry Yang is nearly a household name for being a co-founder of yahoo. Two small COI edit requests

Hi! It's been almost 3 years since I last popped in here as a newbie COI editor...I'm feeling a little sentimental about it, actually. I'm back as hopefully a much more helpful Wikipedian to suggest a couple new updates to the article:

  • In the Philanthropy section, adding a recent donation to San Francisco's Asian Art Museum:
In September 2017, Yang and Yamazaki pledged $25 million toward a $90-million transformation of the Asian Art Museum, the largest financial gift in the museum's history.[1]
  • Mr. Yang has recently rejoined the Stanford Board of Trustees, so here's a more recent citation for that in the "Board seats" section: [2]

That's it! To reiterate what I've said before, I won't be editing directly due to my COI, so any help or feedback is very much appreciated. Thanks for your time and consideration. Mary Gaulke (talk) 21:30, 30 November 2017 (UTC)

Done, toning it down a bit. Jytdog (talk) 23:59, 30 November 2017 (UTC)
Whoa, that was fast! Thank you. Mary Gaulke (talk) 23:06, 1 December 2017 (UTC)
