Hi Eagleash First, see Template:Reflist regarding {{Reflist|30em}}. It is not in the obsolete area. It is most definitely described on how to use it in several spots on this page. Also, when I view articles on my iPhone that use this parameter, the references are most definitely easier to view. They are the same on my desktop with or without the parameter. Did you know that there are now more mobile users than other types? If you do not prefer it, that's fine. But please do not say it's obsolete when it is not. Thanks!
Second, in the WP:ORDER page you referenced, at the end of the "6. English variety and date style" there is a footnote a that says "These templates can also be placed at the end of an article." Just food for thought. Thanks! Happy editing too.
@Dawnleelynn: BTW a ping will not work if added to an existing message. You need to add the 'ping', the message and signature too, all in one go or it will fail.
'30em' has basically been out of use for the best part of a decade now and the reflist template doc. probably should be amended in some way to reflect this. Changes were made so the software currently splits the references into two columns when the No. of citations exceeds 10. The 30em is typically removed where it still appears as it is mainly redundant. How the references are rendered can also depend on screen resolution to an extent.
WP:ORDER clearly puts the date and lang. tags at the top but does go on to say they 'can' be placed later; ('can' but not should). But this is not typical and they are always moved in my experience. Eagleash (talk) 23:37, 11 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Eagleash: Thanks for the information about the ping; I truly did not know that. I still see that the 30em makes a difference when I use or don't use it when I check the article on my phone. And I have had other editors tell me that mobile phones display references better with it. However, I always try to be open-minded. If, as you say, it's deprecated, I am in total agreement that they should update the template documentation. Regarding the order of tags, it's not a big deal to me. I just like the top uncluttered with them and having them at the bottom. However, I may look into this... as you say, my experience is that other editors who edit my articles always move them to the top. So, thanks for the information and I am thankful for it. dawnleelynn(talk)23:48, 11 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
