Limberjack merge proposal

- The result was merge into Jig doll. -- DarkCrowCaw 18:00, 8 May 2012 (UTC)
Considering that Limberjack (which I created) has been growing since 2006, and this article was essentially created two days ago, I would think the merge should be going the other way, turning this into a redirect. --SarekOfVulcan (talk) 18:46, 15 October 2009 (UTC)
- Surely the point of a merger is to go to a more widely understood, more generic title for the subject, rather than to the page that has simply been around longer! I didn't mean to get your hackles up, and I agree that your article is far more Wikipedian in almost every respect than Jig doll (although I have now done some work to rectify that), and that the merger could just as well be in the other direction, but I would respectfully suggest that the title of the article should be changed to Jig doll. - I'm not sure how the Limberjack page has grown over the last two years. The initial text was clearly based upon an old web page of mine. This has now been superceded. Also the Limberjack page implies - actually states - that jig dolls are percussive instruments and is it therefore given the status of a stub. This ignores their long history as street entertainment puppets, and their visual appeal both to children and adults. I am sorry if my attempt to create a Wiki-like page for Jig Dolls failed so miserably. It was my first attempt. Yet I had based it on the structure of the Limberjack page. I am curious to know therefore in what way the Limberjack page conforms to Wiki standards whereas my revised Jig Doll page did not - in any way apparently!! However it seems that there are two strong dancing doll traditions - in the USA and in the UK. Maybe the two pages should remain - each fleshed out with info. about their respective traditions - but linked together. It seems that the various patents also reflected some competition between US and UK inventors. Hmm - jig doll wars - whatever next?!! Perhaps it is best for me to spend time on my web pages. Life is too short to quarrel over trifles. ChrisJBrady (talk) 23:36, 15 October 2009 (UTC)
- Well, no, it wasn't based on your old web page, it was based on my personal knowledge from being a fan of Atwater-Donnelly. If Limberjacks are indeed a subset of jig dolls, you are correct that the info should be at this title -- but we need more than your web page stating so. I've posted at the Roots Music noticeboard asking for more input.--SarekOfVulcan (talk) 12:08, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
- Check out the links on the Jig doll page and you will find plenty of UK (& some European) evidence there. Whether Limberjacks are a subset of, or simply an alias for, jig dolls, is a moot point. The pages need some pictures, which would be a great help in making such a judgement. SiGarb | (Talk) 17:09, 19 October 2009 (UTC)

You see when there is a vitriolic debate and people's hard work gets deleted by someone else (who knows less than the contributor) folk give up because there's little point in wasting time and indeed life in adding / editing / amending / etc. That's what gives Wiki a bad name. I contributed a lot of info. This was then deleted. What's the point. I never went back. Wiki's a bigger time waster thnan electronic games. Life's too short. Period.
