Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Lead section / WP:ALTNAME states:
- "By the design of Wikipedia's software, an article can have only one title. When this title is a name, significant alternative names for the topic should be mentioned in the article, usually in the first sentence or paragraph. These may include alternative spellings, longer or shorter forms, historical names, and significant names in other languages. Indeed, alternative names can be used in article text in contexts where they are more appropriate than the name used as the title of the article. For example, the city now called "Gdańsk" can be referred to as "Danzig" in suited historical contexts. The editor needs to balance the desire to maximize the information available to the reader with the need to maintain readability."
Literally, I can see little relevance here. The article is titled as COMMONAME at Jim Russell, the lead now gives the birth name alone, and did gave the birth name together with the common name as "Herbert James "Jim" Russell". Now either of these seem to be compliant with ALTNAME, as both names are being given (This would be different if the article were renamed away from COMMONNAME to the birth name, as is fairly common practice on WP).
However 'Herbert James "Jim" Russell' is fuller, without confusion (thus meeting the last sentence of ALTNAME). This is a common practice when writing names in bibliographic articles (here and elsewhere). I would like to hear what reason the editor has for repeatedly removing it, for citing ALTNAME as justification over a clearly challenged edit, and for ignoring WP:BRD. - MOS:NICKNAME seems to be relevant here, in particular: If a person has a well-known common hypocorism used in lieu of a given name, it is not presented between quote marks following the last given name or initial, as for Tom Hopper which has just Thomas Edward Hopper. - If you want the two names separated, then that's fine - so long as it's present somehow. Andy Dingley (talk) 08:50, 7 June 2017 (UTC)
