Reach Foundation
editA seperate entry is needed for the Reach Foundation. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Melbob (talk • contribs) 23:46, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
- You can create a new article by simply clicking on Reach Foundation. If you do, though, please make sure that the article shows why the Reach Foundation is notable and is referenced with reliable sources. Best, Jenks24 (talk) 00:37, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
Jim Stynes
editHis life was gentle, and the elements
So mix’d in him that Nature might stand up
And say to all the world, "This was a man!"

Chairman or President?
editThe following uses the phrases 'Chairman' and 'President' interchangably. Was Stynes President or Chairman of Melbourne?
In 2008 Stynes began expressing an interest in becoming CHAIRMAN.[6] In June 2008, Melbourne's CHAIRMAN, Paul Gardner, stepped down as PRESIDENT... In February 2012, Stynes stepped down from the PRESIDENT of Melbourne, citing a desire to devote his energies towards his family and well-being. He is succeeded by his Vice-President, Don McLardy.[9] — Preceding unsigned comment added by 27.32.135.162 (talk) 04:47, 22 March 2012 (UTC)
- If you look at the supporting references, you see that is how he referred to in each of them. President and Chairman aren't mutually exclusive roles; a president is the head administrator, the chairman is in charge of the functioning of the board of directors. Presumably he occupied both roles. Josh Parris 05:05, 22 March 2012 (UTC)
Was the consecutive games record holder or is
editI don't believe the record has been broken (or will be for some time), I think someone has hastily turned all the is to was after Styne's death, but this standing record. should simply be reworded somehow. --Rulesfan (talk) 11:07, 22 March 2012 (UTC)
- I agree that I thought that too many of the "is"s were changed to "was". Everyone is saying that the record will probably never be broken, but since Stynes broke the previous record set in the 30s-40s by Jack Titus, two other players also went past the old record (Goodes and Yze) and Pavlich also made it to 160. Won't be broken at least for another 8-12 years, (I doubt that Kade Simpson, the current leader will play another 100) but I reckon changes like the sub rule might make it easier for players to reach it, not harder. The-Pope (talk) 12:48, 22 March 2012 (UTC)
- Yeah, definitely is. I remember when Yze asked to be dropped to the VFL for a week just so people would stop talking about whether he'd break Stynes's record. Re sub rule: I can see both sides, but most people who are speaking out against it reckon that it will make it harder to carry underdone players into games. Jenks24 (talk) 13:17, 22 March 2012 (UTC)
Debt Demolition
editI think that Stynes role in the Demon's Debt Demolition campaign needs to be said somewhere. He literally saved the club from bankrupcy through this appeal. I'm not sure whether he masterminded it, but he certainly executed and achieved this goal.--Rulesfan (talk) 02:00, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
Introduction
editThe introduction has become bloated. I understand the temptation to cover everything but this is supposed to say why he is notable, not outline all the details of his life story - that is what the rest of the article is about. --Rulesfan (talk) 02:03, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
State funeral
editWhy is his state funeral being held in an Anglican cathedral? Was he not a Catholic? Intelligent Mr Toad (talk) 05:12, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
- You raise an excellent point Intelligent Mr Toad. I think it the venue was selected as it was closest to Federation Square, which allows for an inclusive public space. I think it is reflective of the general culture of secularity in Australia and being a state funeral for someone respected by everyone irrespective of religious demonination. Off topic but this is strangely reflected by obviously religious people from different faiths like Gutnick and Stynes that have been so passionate about a club nicknamed the "Demons" .... back in Ireland it may be a different story. --Rulesfan (talk) 13:16, 24 March 2012 (UTC)
- I heard that it was because his family wanted to do things that didn't fit with the ceremony that would have run in the Catholic alternative. Josh Parris 10:44, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
