Jimmie may have been a Roman Catholic, but he was baptized in the Wheaton Bible Church, about two years before his death. He also attended Wheaton Bible Church at least several times in a wheel chair. I talked to him as I knew some of his history being a big baseball fan by the time of his arrival with the Red Sox. I believe that they tried to make him a shortstop.

I added to his professional career and deleted the erroneous reference to an on-the-field nervous breakdown. That happened in the movie "Fear Strikes Out," not in real life!

-In 1963, I read he ran the bases in reverse order to celebrate his 100th career home run (from third to second to first to home). The day after there was a rule implemented that made it illegal for people to run the bases backwards. Am I wrong?

Reply to unsigned above ...
Indeed, that would have been illegal. What Piersall did was run the bases in the proper order, but running while facing backward, which is merely silly, but still legal. WHPratt (talk) 16:00, 16 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
I just checked, and it would appear that his 100th major league home run turned out to be his only National League homer, so it was strange in another respect. WHPratt (talk) 16:03, 16 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Date of Death

edit

He died on June 3, 2017 his family confirms. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.38.189.88 (talk) 15:08, 4 June 2017 (UTC) I added a reference. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dgndenver (talkcontribs) 19:24, 5 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Piersall then moved to the grandstand roof to heckle home plate umpire Neil Strocchia.

This claim is widely repeated, but Piersall seems to have disputed it. I looked but did not find a reliable source for it. Anyway, it was not supported by the cited reference, so I deleted it. Dgndenver (talk) 19:27, 5 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
