Italian descent?

edit

Yes, he surely has a special connection to Italy, but is he really of Italian descent? According to his surname and look, it looks to me he's more of German descent than Italian. --MrEskola (talk) 09:07, 11 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

His mother's maiden name is Matticchio, so he should be at least half-Italian ethnically. He's identified himself as Italian on MasterChef as well. Brettalan (talk) 18:34, 10 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
Bastianich is an Istrian Italian surname. His parents are Italian because Istria was Italian territory (now Croatia) and they lived many years in Trieste.--Alienautic (talk) 18:28, 21 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Wrong again, Bastianich is without a doubt a Croatian surname (originally Bastijanić) most likely from Labin in Istria. Population of Istria is mixed, so he is probably of Croatian-Italian descent like a lot of Istrians are.--User:Guest (talk) 21:05, 6 December 2013 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.138.241.19 (talk) Reply
Slavic sounding surnames are common in NE Italy, as Italian sounding surnames are common in SE France. It's due to the natural mobility of the populations and the variability of borders throughout history. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.53.159.185 (talk) 12:45, 16 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
His looks are pretty common in Northern Italy, in fact many Northern Italians look a lot "more Nordic" (as silly as that might sound, but since the original poster started it...) than he does. Ethnic Italians originary of Istria often have Slavic sounding names because their last names were made "Slavic sounding" during the times of European uber nationalism (18-19th century). --Remote Helper (talk) 12:04, 22 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

"When Joe is not working the dining room at one of his many restaurants or whipping up new business ventures, he can be found at his home in Greenwich, CT, playing guitar and spending time with his wife, Deanna, and their three children, whom he counts as his greatest achievements to date."

Sounds like this was written by a PR person or publicist... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.136.165.157 (talk) 15:24, 2 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

The Bastianich family is NOT Italian at all. She was on that PBS show "Finding your Roots". She has always claimed that the Yugoslavs changed her family's last name from Matticchio to Motika. Research on the show revealed that this is false. Her original family name is Motika and that it was changed by the family themselves, I guess in hope to get themselves out of Yugoslavia and into Italy. She identifies herself as Italian but DNA taken from her on the show proved that she has 70% Croatian/Slavic blood in her. If this is not proof enough that she isn't really Italian, I don t know what else is.

She simply calls herself an "Italian" because it makes her and her son more money as a famous "Italian" cook than if they are honest and said that they are Croatian/Slavic. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 100.14.48.207 (talk) 14:34, 28 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Meaning of "becco"

edit

Becco doesn't mean "peck, nibble, savor", it means "beak" in its most usual meaning (cfr. https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/becco). Surely it can also mean "I peck, I am pecking" but this is a very unusual thing for non-avian creatures to say ;) Ago (talk) 13:28, 10 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Vandalism

edit

I don't edit wiki much but I looked through the log quickly and didn't see when his Published Works was updated to include the book "2019. My Life with Microphallia. (Knopf)" but I strongly suspect it's a troll. I don't see any original reference to it that isn't a copy/paste of this wiki page so if someone wants to verify and update. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2603:8090:1200:E00:9A56:FA4F:F7FB:AE73 (talk) 03:28, 9 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Racism and General Dickery

edit

God this guy is an asshole. Why does the previous page not mention the multiple instances where he calls cultural foods- usually Asian cuisines- 'unrefined' or purposefully mispronounces the names of dishes? What about when he claimed 'Asia doesn't have pasta'? What about the entire fiasco where he made some EXTREMELY ableist comments towards Christine Hà, implying she should be in a coat room rather than a kitchen because of her blindness? Not to mention the way he refused to address his comments on the matter after she WON THE WHOLE COMPETITION. I hope this guy rots in hell forever. He's so disgusting and rancid. Also totally unqualified to be on the show, IMO. Being a judge on MasterChef should require you to be an accomplished chef, someone who's made progress in the kitchen. Having an Italian mommy he got to run to after his stocks career blew up does not a culinary legend make. 2601:C2:187F:1690:561:C4F3:86B6:6747 (talk) 21:28, 12 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
