Biographical observation
editWhen I was a small child, I attended the elementary school in Chapman, Kansas, Engle's "hometown." The school decided to have do a thing where we all held up papers as he flew over in a jet: I believe it was spelled out as "JOE" and this was done around 1988. I also remember walking with him in a parade in 1989: I suppose the only interesting things that ever came out of the area were him & Abilene, Kansas 5 miles away; as I understand, the area has declined in population and activity.
Name Error
editEngle was actually born in abilene, KS. which is 11 miles west of chapman on I 70. General Engle's birth name is "Joe Henry Engle", not "Joseph Henry Engle".
Name is Incorrect
editJoseph Henry Engle is incorrect for this individual. His birth certificate reads "Joe Henry Engle"

The result of the proposal was move per request. Moving is the default for requested moves that are not clearly improper even with little or no participation since boldness allows moves without discussion, prevented here by a technical limitation. This does appear to be the common name; a Google search with names in quotes +NASA finding orders of magnitude more results for the move target.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 15:19, 17 January 2009 (UTC)
Requested Move
editJoseph Henry Engle --> Joe Engle
The article, as well as the cited bio at NASA [1], refer to him as Joe Henry Engle. Most references simply use "Joe Engle" (as did the original page title in 2006) and that follows WP article naming guidelines. At least 2 users raised this before and nothing appears to have been done about it. (I might have moved it back myself but there's a 2nd edit on Talk because of a fixed dble re-direct) -- RCEberwein | Talk 16:14, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

Rank may be incorrect.
editMr. Engle is listed as an Air Force colonel. I'm watching him in a lecture right now on NASA TV and they have him listed as a Major General (retired).
I'm gonna have to go with NASA on this one.
EDIT: My bad. I jumped the gun and didn't realize he was promoted to Maj. General in the National Guard. It looks like both NASA TV and the article are correct.

I attended Chapman schools and knew his nieces and parents. My parents purchaced three commemorative for me - "Columbia Space Shuttle Flight II Nov 12 1981" on one side and Commander Joe Engle Chapman, Kansas on the other side. 24.166.183.70 (talk) 15:05, 1 October 2010 (UTC)Vicki
