Links to Masimo, both pages are obviously corporate created promotional pages and NOT what Wikipedia is all about. A minor corporate figure trying to look. Important. Needs to be removed. Thoughts? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Brazillianideas (talkcontribs) 16:15, 19 March 2011

Yes, all the external links embedded in the article must be removed per WP:MOS#External links. In some rare cases, an argument can be mounted to support such links, but that is not the case here. There are a number of SPA accounts currently active and all their edits need scrutiny. I have reported the issue at WP:COIN#Masimo and related. Johnuniq (talk) 00:34, 20 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
Please stop adding the word "numerous" to describe the lawsuits on this article. It's uninformative (how many exactly is that?) and not neutral, as it ventures the opinion to the reader that it's a lot. If you know the precise number then add that, otherwise leave it out. Thanks. --Escape Orbit (Talk) 18:43, 20 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Changes ahve improved neutrality. References are independent sites that back up for tatement made in article. Suggest editors take care to provide specific comments about statements or sources if they have criticisms. Future reflexive undos of edits and tags added by SPA accounts should be examined by experienced editors. --Deviceauthor1 (talk) 05:18, 22 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Inappropriate wording

edit

I have removed some recent edits because the text used non-encyclopedic material that is not appropriate at Wikipedia. Examples: "Kiani and Diab were convinced that..." (suitable for company website, blog, or an article written by a single author where it is clear that the words are the opinion of the author; even if sourced, such text is not suitable here as articles should use neutral text describing facts); "Masimo's mission..." (suitable for company website; not relevant here); "Multiple studies have shown..." (company promotion—the simple facts from the article abstract could be used in an article about the product but are not suitable as a decoration here). It would be best if editors were to ask questions about Wikipedia's procedures rather than repeatedly attempt to use this page as an extension of the company website. Johnuniq (talk) 04:03, 12 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the editing suggestions. How should the benefit of the products be described within Wiki editing standards, the benefits seem as relevant as the product function?--Deviceauthor1 (talk) 18:28, 13 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
Added factual content referenced by the clinical study and "rainbow Acoustic Monitoring" technology.--Deviceauthor1 (talk) 18:41, 13 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
Please do not use Wikipedia to extol the benefit of any products. Yes, some brief mention of an advantage is acceptable (referenced to a reliable secondary source), but it should be obvious that pages here are not the same as those on the company website—each has its own purpose, and promotional blurbs go on Masimo's website, not here. If you have a more specific question, please ask it.
You might read WP:TP to learn about indenting comments (I added a colon before your comment to indent it). Johnuniq (talk) 04:16, 14 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi! I work closely with Joe Kiani and would like to disclose a conflict of interest. There are a few changes to the page that I’d like to suggest:

  1. In the Early life section can we add the source below following citations 1, 2, and 3?

https://www.forbes.com/sites/kerryadolan/2022/10/03/meet-the-iranian-immigrant-who-became-a-covid-medtech-billionaire/?sh=2f8be5bd2abc

2. In the Early life section, can we add the following information?

Beginning in 1989, Kiani worked at Anthem Electronics. While with the company, Kiani detected an issue with the devices, and pitched the company a solution, which they declined. Following this, Kiani established his own business while maintaining a role with Anthem Electronics until 1991.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/kerryadolan/2022/10/03/meet-the-iranian-immigrant-who-became-a-covid-medtech-billionaire/?sh=2f8be5bd2abc

3. Can we add the following source to this sentence in the Career at Masimo section?

Kiani founded the medical technology company Masimo in 1989 and was later joined by partner Mohammed Diab.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/kerryadolan/2022/10/03/meet-the-iranian-immigrant-who-became-a-covid-medtech-billionaire/?sh=2f8be5bd2abc

4. Add the following source to this sentence after citations 6 and 7 in the Career at Masimo section?

Kiani is listed as an inventor on more than 500 patents or patent applications for advanced signal processing, optical sensors, and wearable technologies. Masimo pulse oximetry is used to monitor over 200 million patients per year

https://www.ocbj.com/healthcare/masimos-moment/

5. Can we change this sentence “Kiani is listed as inventor on more than 500 patents or patent applications for advanced signal processing, optical sensors, and wearable technologies.” to read as follows?

“Kiani is listed as an inventor on more than 500 patents or patent applications for advanced signal processing, optical sensors, and wearable technologies."

6. Fix the spelling of oximeter to oximetry in this sentence?

Pulse oximetry is one of the most commonly used monitoring technologies in healthcare. Masimo makes a pulse oximetry technology known as Signal Extraction Technology (SET), which is the first pulse oximeter technology to reliably measure-through motion and low perfusion conditions.

7. Remove “to date” and replace it with “As of March 2021,” in the following sentence?

As of March 2021, ten published CCHD screening studies, all with positive conclusions and representing over 300,000 infants, including the largest CCHD study, have used Masimo SET.

Thank you for your help with this!

When a person is affiliated with the American right, it’s noted and harshly so. This guy is a Biden, left winger and there’s no notice made of that. Bias? Bias at Wikipedia?!? No! That’s never the case. 71.125.255.77 (talk) 01:45, 25 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

His association with Biden is listed in the “Controversies & Investigations” section. If this is not “noted and harshly so”, I don’t know what is.
On other biographies, including those of right-wing leaning [non-politcal] personalities, political activities are often noted in the “Personal Life” section.
This is not an example of bias. 2.49.105.92 (talk) 08:19, 26 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Your edit request could not be reviewed because the request is not formatted correctly.

  1. The citation style predominantly used by the Joe Kiani article appears to be Citation Style 1. The citation style used in the edit request consists of bare URL's.[a] Any requested edit of yours which may be implemented will need to resemble the current style already in use in the article – in this case, CS1. (See WP:CITEVAR.)
  2. Citation ref tags have not been placed within the requested text indicating which portions of the text the source is referencing. (See WP:INTEGRITY.)

In the collapsed section below titled Request edit examples, I have illustrated two: The first shows how the edit request was submitted; the second shows how requests should be submitted in the future.

Request edit examples
INCORRECT

The Sun's diameter is 864,337.3 miles, while the Moon's diameter is 2,159 miles. The Sun's temperature is 5,778 Kelvin.

https://www.booksource.com
https://www.journalsource.com
https://www.websource.com

In the example above there are three URL's provided with the claim statements, but these URL's have not been placed using Citation Style 1, which is the style predominantly used by the Joe Kiani article. Additionally, ref tags have not been placed within the text at the exact positions where the information they reference resides. Using the correct style and the correct positioning of the ref tags, the WikiFormatted text should resemble the following:

CORRECT

The Sun's diameter is 864,337.3 miles,<ref>{{cite book|last1=Sjöblad|first1=Tristan|title=The Sun|url=http://www.booksource.com|publisher=Academic Press|date=2020|page=1}}</ref> while the Moon's diameter is 2,159 miles.<ref>{{cite journal|last1=Harinath|first1=Prisha|title=Size of the Moon|journal=Science|issue=78|volume=51|url=http://www.journalsource.com|date=2020|page=46}}</ref> The Sun's temperature is 5,778 Kelvin.<ref>{{cite book|last1=Uemura|first1=Shu|title=The Sun's Heat|url=http://www.websource.com|publisher=Academic Press|date=2020|page=2}}</ref>

Which displays as:

In the example above the references have been formatted according to Citation Style 1, which shows the author, the source's name, date, etc. Also, the ref tags are placed in the exact location where the text which they reference resides. As Wikipedia is a volunteer project, edit requests such yours are generally expected to have this formatting done before the request is submitted for review.

Kindly rewrite your edit request so that it aligns more with the second example shown in the collapsed section above, and feel free to re-submit that edit request at your earliest convenience. Hi @Spintendo,

Thank you for your help! As per your feedback here is the amended request:

  1. Add the following sentence to the Honors, awards, and additional philanthropic efforts section:

In 2012, Kiani was named Ernst & Young National Entrepreneur of the Year, Life Sciences, for demonstrating commitment and vision in revolutionizing the health care industry through the creation and commercialization of innovative noninvasive patient monitoring technologies.[1]

Reason- After looking into the Ernst & Young National Entrepreneur of the Year Award, it seems to be notable due to recipients such as Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Brad Keywell, and Rubens Menin having the award listed on the Wikipedia pages, and the award has its own individual Wikipedia page.

2. Add the following sentence to the Honors, awards, and additional philanthropic efforts section:

In 2018, the Intellectual Property Owners Education Foundation (IPOEF) honored Kiani with the first IP Champion Award, for "extraordinary leadership in advocating for the value of intellectual property to the progress of innovation."[2]

Reason- The award is notable and I have provided the source that the last request was missing.

3. Change the following sentence from:

In 2020, Kiani joined Chris Evans and Mark Kassen in creating A Starting Point, a video-based civic engagement platform whose mission is to create a bipartisan channel of communication and connectivity between Americans and their elected officials., with the goal of creating a more informed electorate.[3]

To

Kiani joined Chris Evans and Mark Kassen in 2020 and created A Starting Point, a video-based civic engagement platform whose mission is to create communication and connection between Americans and their elected officials.[4] [5]

Reason- The changes prevent plagiarism, the section from reading like a listicle, and appropriate sourcing has been provided.

4. Change the following sentence from:

In September 2021, Kiani was appointed to the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) by President Joe Biden.[6]

To

President Joe Biden appointed Kiani to the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) in September 2021.[7]

Reason- The changes prevent the section from reading like a listicle, and appropriate sourcing has been provided.

Thank you again for your help! Please let me know if you have feedback or any suggestions.

Hi all, I’m looking to have the Controversies and Investigations section removed from the article due to the following reasons:

  • The official government document outlines that the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is conducting an investigation into the Office of Management and Budget, not Joe Kiani. However, the current wording of the paragraph makes it sound like Mr. Kiani is the one being looked into. This information would likely be better suited for the Office of Management and Budget Wikipedia page. See: WP: Neutral point of view, WP:OOS, WP: ROC
  • This information regarding Kiani’s relationship with Joe Biden is speculative. The investigation regarding their government contracts began in April 2022, and no results of the investigation have been published yet. We believe this violates Wikipedia's guidelines regarding unverifiable speculation. See WP: Crystal Ball
  • The section details an ongoing investigation that has yet to reach a conclusion. While the investigation has received some press coverage, it is still very much a “newsworthy event,” and according to Wikipedia guidelines, “most newsworthy events do not qualify for inclusion.” See: WP: NOTNEWS, WP: Notability
  • One of the sources used to cite the section is a press release and not a Wikipedia approved source. See: WP: Neutral point of view
  • The text mentions Republicans raising concerns over his actions, which we believe also falls under the category of an unverifiable presumption. See: WP: Crystal Ball
  • The editor who made the changes is new to the platform and has only made edits to Joe Kiani’s Wikipedia page, therefore, presenting some bias. See WP: Neutral point of view
  • Masimo has been receiving government contracts since 2002 and has received $26.1 million in funding total, many of which was received under other administrations, so the company receiving funding now is not out of the ordinary. [Higher Gov, 2023] See: WP: Neutral point of view

Thank you!

Edit Request

edit

Hi all,

I recently posted the consensus discussion above regarding the Controversies and Investigations section of the article. I was wondering if the request above is formatted properly or if there is something needed of me to get the discussion started.

Thank you for your continuous help, I really appreciate it! Masimo58 (talk) 17:59, 2 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Everything looks fine to me. I've moved this discussion up a bit, so your consensus building can be at the bottom of the page, (since editors always look to the last level 2 header-type conversations in a talk page first, knowing that's where the most recent discussions are always located) .Now, a good way to reach out to editors would be to visit the various Wikiprojects listed at the top of this talk page. Each project has a discussion page where you can post a brief message inviting editors to come and discuss. (When you place links in those discussion boards that direct editors back to the discussion below, make sure you include the exact header where the discussion takes place. You don't want to just give the link for the entire talk page. A link to the header will include the #symbol and the full title of the header.) Lastly, if you're able to achieve consensus for making this change, don't forget to activate a new {{Edit COI}} template at the bottom of the page asking for an editor to come and implement the change for you. Concerns about the Controversies and Investigations section

edit

I’m looking to have the Controversies and Investigations section removed from the article due to the following reasons:

  • The official government document outlines that the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is conducting an oversight/inquiry (not an investigation) into the Office of Management and Budget, not Joe Kiani.
The inquiry regarding their government contracts began in April 2022, and no results of the inquiry have been published yet. We believe this violates Wikipedia's guidelines regarding unverifiable speculation. See WP: Crystal Ball
  • The section details an ongoing inquiry that has yet to reach a conclusion. While the inquiry has received some press coverage, it is still very much a “newsworthy event,” and according to Wikipedia guidelines, “most newsworthy events do not qualify for inclusion.” See: WP: NOTNEWS, WP: Notability
While we are trying to assume good faith, we are wondering if this might be a targeted edit in retaliation to Masimo’s current legal battles with Apple. Merchant, Brian (2023-10-05). "An Orange County entrepreneur's $60-million legal battle to stop Apple from steamrolling startups". Los Angeles Times. Los Angeles Times. Retrieved 2023-10-09. See WP: Neutral point of view
  • Masimo has been receiving government contracts since 2002 and has received $26.1 million in funding total, many of which was received under other administrations, so the company receiving funding now is not out of the ordinary. "Masimo Corporation". Higher Gov. HigherGov. Retrieved 2023-08-08. See: WP: Neutral point of view

Consensus discussion to decide to remove the Controversies and Investigation section

edit

06-October-2023: This is a WP:Consensus discussion, about Issues surrounding the Controversies and Investigation section of the article ..... For more details, see above #Concerns about the Controversies and Investigations section.

Agree
(All who agree, list your comments here; see below Oppose/Neutral.)
  1. Agree. State why.

I agree that this section should be removed. It essentially regurgitates a single accusation made over 2.5 years ago that was never publicly adjudicated or discussed further. It was/is not a noteworthy or meaningful controversy. Furthermore, this section is poorly cited – both of the citations are essentially one press release from the accusing party. I have no conflicts of interest in this matter; in fact I had no prior knowledge of Mr. Kiani or Masimo's existence until an hour ago. IAlexR (talk) 09:46, 19 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Oppose
(All who oppose the decision, list your comments below.)
  1. Oppose. State why.
Neutral
(All users neutral about the issue, list your comments below.)
  1. Neutral. State why.

Article needs significant editing for neutrality

edit

I'm adding the {Advert} template because this article needs some attention from an editor or editors with more experience than I have. The first three sections read like a promotional biography from a corporate website. I wasn't sure if I should add {Autobio} or {Like resume} as well, but I figured it was more conservative to start with just one.

Furthermore, much of the article's edit history appears to have come from editors with a conflict of interest. While user Masimo58 seems to have disclosed their COI on this talk page and gone through the appropriate process to request edits, in the 2010s much of the page was created by accounts like Phoenix573, Cortonwood, NellcorPro, and MasimoCorp, who were warned or banned for having a COI, as well as other single-purpose accounts that added assorted puffery to this article.

And of course there's the final section, which raises essentially the opposite concern, but that's already being addressed in "Concerns about the Controversies and Investigations section" above. IAlexR (talk) 10:25, 19 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
