Hatnote
editHas anyone in the known universe ever confused Joe Montana with Joe Mantegna other than Eagles247? I've never seen a more unnecessary disambig note above the lede in any WP article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.186.45.94 (talk) 04:36, 5 December 2010 (UTC)
- Mantegna is pronounced Mon-tAn-ya. Montana is pronounced Mon-tan-a. The pronunciation is very similar, and some people many type in Joe Montana into Wikipedia when they are looking for Mantega. Eagles 24/7 (C) 04:40, 5 December 2010 (UTC)

You need to update where it says Len Dawson offered #16 to Joe Montana when he went to Kansas City.
edit"I wouldn't like them to un-retire it," Dawson said. "Lamar Hunt retired my number, not that I ever asked him to, but he said on the field in 1976 that no Chief would ever wear 16 again."

Elite QBs
editAll of the elite QBs not named Montana have 3 sections for statistics: their NFL career, their playoff record, their Superbowl record. Why not Montana? As THE elite QB, Montana should merit all 3 discussions as do the QBs who are NOT his peers. Bluedudemi (talk) 14:26, 27 January 2019 (UTC)
- @Bluedudemi: I'm not sure why there isn't a statistics section for the playoffs, but I agree, there should be one there. —C.Fred (talk) 17:19, 27 January 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for the concurrence. Other elite QBs have this, so should Joe "Cool" Bluedudemi (talk) 03:17, 28 January 2019 (UTC)
Montana's paternal ancestry
editI would like to know some more about Joe Montana's paternal ancestry, which seems to be quite unclear when it comes to the place in Italy where the Montana family was from. Some sources have it that the family's descent is from Piedmont, Northern Italy, namely from the Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola (according to https://www.geni.com/people/Joe-Montana/6000000011734692287 and https://www.derbund.ch/sport/weitere/wenn-der-coole-jimmy-den-wurfarm-schwingt/story/14127175): the first source reports the family tree as a whole, here the original family name seems to have been Montani; the second source is from a well-known Swiss newspaper, here the original family is reported as Montagni and the place of origin seems to have been Domodossola. Other sources have it that Montana family came from the Province of Brescia, Lombardy some report from Chiari (http://www.endzone.it/2004/07/18/joe_montana_di_alessandro_ecchili/ , http://marino.blogautore.repubblica.it/2016/06/11/nfl-i-sessantanni-di-joe-montana-il-piu-grande-di-sempre/), some from Val Camonica (http://camonica-club.blogspot.com/2011/10/patihi-patahe-camuni-of-brescia-in_25.html). Plus, an old Los Angeles Times article reports the original family name was Montagna (https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1985-01-20-sp-10555-story.html)..... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.208.154.73 (talk) 17:34, 26 January 2020 (UTC)
"... First AFC Championship . . ."
editThe opening text about Joe Montana mentions that he led the Kansas City Chiefs to their first AFC championship game in 1994, but how can that be true if they went to two previous Superbowls (I & IV)? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.25.151.47 (talk) 02:29, 4 February 2020 (UTC)
- The AFC Championship Game began in 1970, after the NFL-AFL merger. When the Chiefs won their first Super Bowl they had to win the AFL Championship Game previously. Eagles 24/7 (C) 15:47, 4 February 2020 (UTC)
Lede revision
editI think this lede needs an overhaul. My draft is here.
- Wikipedia tends to describe great quarterbacks as being among the greatest quarterbacks of all time, not the greatest players. See Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Dan Marino, Terry Bradshaw, and Aaron Rodgers. This is probably because while quarterback lists are common, listing various position players in the same list is less so. I would rephrase this as one of the greatest quarterbacks.
- With that in mind I added three major sources listing him as the second greatest quarterback of all time, NFL.com, Bleacher Report, and USA Today.
- There's no source for Montana being compared to Tom Brady. I remember this being a debate from 2015-2016 but I don't see it "frequently" today at all.
- His Comeback Player of the Year award, "Sportsman of the Year" award, and jersey retirings are not lede worthy. These appear in the highlights and awards sections of Brady's, Manning's, and Bradshaw's articles but not in their ledes.
- There's no source for the Sporting News list.
- Being selected unanimously to the NFL 100 team needs to be mentioned.
- With the 75th Anniversary and 100th Anniversary all time teams being mentioned in the lede, I think the 1980s All-Decade Team bit can be removed from the lede for brevity.
- I don't think ESPN naming him the 25th greatest athlete of the 20th century in 1999 is lede worthy but it should be mentioned elsewhere.
- General rephrasing.
- Links to Wiki pages added as needed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Somarain (talk • contribs) 19:28, 19 March 2021 (UTC)

New Image
editThis photo is blurry, and not indicative of Joe Montana. I won't change it on my own because I am a newer user. However, I'd suggestive to look towards the Joe Namath page or the Peyton Manning for images that indicate the Quarterback as either a player or after their career ends. I believe Montana should be have an image during his career because he has had a more private life after football. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kingfisher2014 (talk • contribs) 09:31, 29 December 2021 (UTC)
