Huge verifiability and puffery issues
Wikipedia policy in WP:Verify provides that: "This policy requires that anything challenged or likely to be challenged, including all quotations, be attributed to a reliable source in the form of an inline citation, and that the source directly supports the material in question. This is strictly applied to all material in the mainspace—articles, lists, sections of articles, and captions—without exception, and in particular to material about living persons. Anything that requires but lacks a source may be removed, and unsourced contentious material about living persons must be removed immediately." I have removed all sources which do not "directly support the material in question", as the citations misleadingly reference a purportedly reliable source, but in fact result to subjective websites with no editorial control, such as Rickross.com, apologetics.com, the Cult Awareness and Information Society, non-existent LA Times articles, or self-published books. Referencing such websites and self-published works violates our policies in WP:SPS. On the converse, much of the purportedly positive information is gleaned directly from MSIA and affiliated websites, and again, self-published books with no editorial oversight. Both of these directions violate our rules about verifiability and reliable sources, and further, when statements about living persons are made on Wikipedia they must adhere to our policies reflected in WP:BLP, which do not permit subjective and narrow sources for notorious claims. It's not a good practice to try to balance a puff-piece with misleading citations to subjective sources. WP:BLP provides: "Biographies of living persons (BLPs) must be written conservatively and with regard for the subject's privacy. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a tabloid: it is not Wikipedia's job to be sensationalist, or to be the primary vehicle for the spread of titillating claims about people's lives, and the possibility of harm to living subjects must always be considered when exercising editorial judgment. This policy applies to BLPs, including any living person mentioned in a BLP even if not the subject of the article, and to material about living persons on other pages. The burden of evidence for any edit on Wikipedia rests with the person who adds or restores material." EnabledDanger (talk) 00:29, 23 September 2010 (UTC)
- I'm not sure about all of the specific, but I agree with the premise and conclusion: this article has serious problems. Too much space is devoted to some issues (the Whitmores, for example), and there is a reliance on self-published sources, such as McWilliams. I think the article needs an overhaul.
