Images

• The image is tagged as public domain, but based on the description in the tag, I don't see how that's possible. Am I missing something?

 Not done The image was sent to User:UncleKenneth by Black Inc Books with the comment "As far as we know the attached image is in the public domain". I agree it is probably a problem. Will hunt for a 'freeer' one.... Regards, Ariconte (talk) 02:34, 14 April 2016 (UTC)

Academic contribution

• "He wrote two seminal books on colonial New South Wales showing 'a raw intellectual power'..." It would be better to name the source of that assessment in the text. When you print these assessments directly in the text, it makes it read like these are Wikipedia's assessments of Hirst, which creates NPOV problems. For example: "He wrote two seminal books on colonial New South Wales that [whoever] described as showing Hirst's 'raw intellectual power'..."

• "He was a 'creative historian capable of engaging a wide audience, as well as a public intellectual who delighted, infuriated and provoked'." Same as above: who said this?
• "To read Hirst is not ..." Same problem.
• "Hirst was fearlessly honest..." Again, this sounds like your opinion.

General comments

• There isn't anything here on his life outside academia. Where was he from? Who were his parents? Was he married? Did he have children?

Y Hard to find refs to personal life.... somewhat improved.

• I think the prose is generally good, but all of your paragraphs start with the same word ("Hirst"). Some variety would make for more enjoyable reading.

OK, I think everything is resolved here except for the image. If a free one can't be found, do you think one of you could come up with a fair use rationale and get it in that way? I'm not an expert, but that seems legitimate to me. --Coemgenus (talk) 13:50, 16 April 2016 (UTC)

@UncleKenneth:, @Ariconte: any luck with File:John Hirst.jpeg yet? As I said above, moving it to Wikipedia instead of Commons and supplying a fair use rationale should suffice, I think. --Coemgenus (talk) 21:49, 19 April 2016 (UTC)

@UncleKenneth:, @Ariconte: This is the only thing left. Can one of you fix it? I'd hate to fail an article over something so minor and fixable, but without appropriately licensed images, it can't be a GA. --Coemgenus (talk) 14:27, 21 April 2016 (UTC)

I'm on holiday in Maui and today I'm going snorkelling..... I don't think fair use is appropriate as we don't meet some of the requirements and I think we will be able to clarify the author / license status of the image we have with a bit of work.... but it can wait. OK, if that's the case, how about I remove the image and promote the article. If you get a picture you can use within the rules, you can add it in later. OK? --Coemgenus (talk) 01:37, 22 April 2016 (UTC)

Bibliography

I have commenced an expansion of the Bibliography section. Capitalization and punctuation follow standard cataloguing rules in AACR2 and RDA, as much as Wikipedia templates allow it. ISBNs and other persistent identifiers, where available, are commented out, but still available for reference. Feel free to continue. Sunwin1960 (talk) 11:32, 23 July 2017 (UTC)
