editNot sure how to deal with John's son, John. It would be a lot easier if they had different names, but I'm pretty sure we don't need separate pages for them. I wish I had a copy of Duby handy... Lordjim13 02:04, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
On the Earl Marshal page it lists Richard de Clare as the Lord Marshal prior to John (the Younger), whereas from what I recall John (Snr.) was Marshal (hence the name) and won the honor as a heriditary title. I don't have the resources to research it right now... Lordjim13 00:33, 17 November 2006 (UTC)
Infobox problem
editthe infobox for the Lord Marshal says the incumbent held the position until 1199; neither John Marshal mentioned lives that long; any way to clear up the discrepancy by checking primary or secondary sources? --FeanorStar7 16:27, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

The result of the move request was: moved to John Marshal (died 1165) (non-admin closure). Both in agreement that a new title is needed and Necrothesp has made a good argument that the original proposed title is ambiguous. Jenks24 (talk) 10:27, 24 October 2023 (UTC)
John FitzGilbert, Marshal of the horses → John Marshal (Marshal of England) – Seems to be most often known via sources under this name. [1] A more succinct disambiguator seems to be necessary as well. Utopes (talk / cont) 00:59, 8 October 2023 (UTC) — Relisting. BegbertBiggs (talk) 21:36, 16 October 2023 (UTC)
- Move to John Marshal (died 1165). His son had the same name and was also marshal. Normally I don't support YOB/YOD without another disambiguator, but given his name and his disambiguator are the same and his name came from his post I think it's more appropriate here. -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:03, 10 October 2023 (UTC)
