2001 Award

In 2001 John Mayer received The prestigious ASCAP Foundation Sammy Cahn Award[1]. The award is given each year to a promising lyricist from The ASCAP Foundation Songwriter Workshop Series [2] who is selected by a distinguished group of songwriters. The award was created to commemorate the life and career of the late lyricist Sammy Cahn [3] .

Essay Tag

This article is written like a story, essay or magazine article which is not an appropriate tone for an encyclopedia. This ofter happens when an article is edited by fans. And that's OK, I appreciate the work others have put into the article. At the same time it's now appropriate to begun editing it to remove the 'creative writing' and editorializing in the text. I will begin this process soon but wanted to give a chance for discussion since I see this is a protected and possibly contentious article. Here are some examples from the lead in bold that need to be either be quoted from a source or taken out

• John Clayton Mayer (pronounced /ˈmeɪ.ər/ MAY-ər;[2] born October 16, 1977) is an American musician. Originally from Connecticut[clarification needed], he attended Berklee College of Music before moving to Atlanta, Georgia in 1997, where he refined his skills and gained a following. His first two studio albums, Room for Squares and Heavier Things, did well commercially, achieving multi-platinum status. In 2003, he won a Best Male Pop Vocal Performance Grammy Award for "Your Body Is a Wonderland".-- — Kbob • Talk • 22:37, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
  • I really appreciate you taking this to the talk page so it can be hashed out civilly. That said, I have no problem with individual qualms here and there; as an article expands, refinement will be necessary. But putting an article tag on a featured article for verbiage that has been approved by the Feature Article committee creates two problems: (1) it suggests that one editor knows better than the consensus of the body of editors that FA checked the article and (2) it diminishes the value of the FA distinction. Tagging an entire FA article should be a last resort for articles that have really deviated from the standard it had at its approval, and I think it is safe to say this article has not. The lead section is virtually unchanged except for a mention of his album that came out in November and the addition of another last sentence. In addressing the portions you have bolded: How can the fact that he is from Connecticut be clarified anymore? All FA bio lead sections mention three things in the first couple sentences: the full name, the birth date and the place of origin. Also, the two other portions you bolded are in keeping with this policy, as quoted from WP:LEAD: "The lead must conform to verifiability and other policies. The verifiability policy advises that material that is challenged or likely to be challenged, and quotations, should be cited. Because the lead will usually repeat information also in the body, editors should balance the desire to avoid redundant citations in the lead with the desire to aid readers in locating sources for challengeable material." Because of this fact, most lead sections have few to no references except for contentious information (like sexual orientation, criminal convictions, etc...) and quotes. Fewer citations are done on the standard that any assertion in the lead section will be correctly cited in the body of the article. You will find that is the case with both portions that you bolded. They are amply referenced...how well he has done commercially is abundantly referenced throughout the article and the fact that he "refined his skills and gained a following in Atlanta" is a pretty concise summary of the Early career and a portion of the Major label success sections. Both sentences were approved by the FA Committee.
    To be fair, I think the Continuum era section can be tightened up some, and the Battle Studies section probably needs some expansion. Perhaps we can collaborate on these sections in days to come.--Esprit15d • talk • contribs 05:13, 3 February 2010 (UTC)

If you have a link for me to a page with that review etc, I'd be interested in looking at it and learning from it. With this in mind I am ok with the items I bolded except the "from CT" text. The problem I have is that its not specific sounds like slang. Its not an encyclopedic expression. Was he born in CT? Did he go to school there? I think it would be an improvement to the lead if it was more specific. What do you think? I would also be interested in working together on the other sections that mentioned. Your appearance has made me take another look at the article, and I have been kind of hacking away at some of the substandard prose that has crept in by adding references, rewording, updating dated language, etc...As for the Connecticut sentence, he was born in Bridgeport, raised in Fairfield. I think that sentence was basically saying that even though he was raised in Connecticut, he went to college in Boston (which the sentence does't actually mention). Yes, ABC source is preferred. Where will this text be added? And what will it say? Things that stars do are reported in the news everyday and not all of them are appropriate for inclusion. Is his last name Phillips or Mayer? It looks like someone changed his last name to phillips and then continued using it further in the article. John Mayer Was Poor???

I find it extremely difficult to believe that John ever pumped gas for a living for over a year. That smacks of self-made myth. Has it been verified that his promo people didn't pay off Pete at the Mobil? You have tons of inaccurate information. Richard Mayer was high school principal, and didn't own a studio in the world. Dating and Relationship to the Media

It's become so long, I think a separate article on John Mayer controversies might be in order, similar to existing articles such as Pat Robertson controversies, Controversies surrounding Robert Falcon Scott, and Controversies surrounding Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. John Mayer may be the most controversial, tabloid-headline-getting musician out there since Britney Spears or Amy Winehouse. We just need to make sure that a separate John Mayer controversies article, if we end up creating one, would be balanced enough to not read like a POV fork or an Attack page. Health

I just wanted to point out that as of January 17, 2012, John has been given the all clear from his doctor and is planning on getting back to work on the new album. This is per a post on his blog. No mention of this has been made in the article, and I figured I'd point it out if someone wanted to update that portion under the "Born and Raised" subsection of "Career." Born And Raised Lead Single 'Shadow Days' Clip Posted

On February 16th 2012, John updated his blog posting the first sample of his new single 'Shadow Days'. He introduced the 60-second clip as "a clip of the first single off Born and Raised". I feel this is important to update to the 'Born and Raised' section, at least temporarily, especially seeing as John gained fame as a musician and this is a big announcement pertaining to his core appeal. Pronunciation of surname

Mistake in Timeline of

Under the Playboy controversy heading, it is written that he gave the interview in "April 2010" although it then goes on to say that it was published online in February 2010 in the sentence following. Furthermore, the Huffington Post article cited at the end of the "April 2010" date is an article from again, February 2010. This is confusing and I think a mistake. It should be changed to either February 2010 (the publication date) or earlier, but certainly not after. Piling prepositional phrases & relative clauses up like this is risky--the subordinate clause "where he has purchased a home," in this case, seems to be talking about throat surgery--which, of course, makes no sense. It would be more logical if you moved the clause so that it appears immediately after "Montana" and set it off with commas. Also, I am not sure what citation style is used here, but typically the citation should appear before the period. Otherwise it is hard to tell what the citation is attached to. The new sentence (and the previous one, with the citations in their correct place):

Mayer sold his home in the Los Angeles suburbs in 2011 [3][4][113]. He also recently sold his apartment in New York City's SoHo neighborhood and moved to Montana, where he has purchased a home, following his throat surgery[114].

The Instruments He Plays

I'm not sure that the instruments listed under John Mayer are correct. There are multiple John Mayers, one of which plays the Clarinet. However, the instruments mentioned have no citations. After substantial research I was unable to find any information regarding his playing many of the ones listed, besides guitar, harmonica, and possibly piano. In May of 2013, Mayer posted on his Tumblr blog that a new record was on the way and set to be released that summer. On the post, he specifically pointed out that the new album would not be a "Born and Raised plus," but a group of songs "to bring the whole thing up to date in 2013." Through various social media outlets, Mayer made it apparent that the album was being produced by Don Was, who also produced his 5th studio album, "Born and Raised." Through studio-released pictures, some of the same members in his recent touring band were recording with Mayer in the studio (Aaron Sterling and Sean Hurley.) On his YouTube channel, Mayer started a video playlist to keep fans updated with the recording process. On May 25, 2013, Mayer confirmed that his first single, "Paper Doll," was in progress and would be finished in weeks. Currently, there is no title to the record.

The points you have proposed seem like trivia to me and the source you have provided is not a reliable source per WP:RS. So let's wait on this. This sentence: Mayer has also done endorsements, such as a Volkswagen commercial for the Beetle's guitar outlet... does not sound correct. I think Beetles refers to Beatles and not sure what Volkswagen would have to do with a Beetles guitar outlet. (Does the author really mean The Beatle's Guitar Hero game? Thanks,

Is the Controvery section encyclopedic?

I can see that removing it entirely might be seen as being too kind to his celebrity status, but the writing seems less than encyclopedic. In particular the language used in the section - while coming directly from quotes - doesn't really add much to it. John's heavy involvement in the watch community

It's not worthy of its own sub-section, but a huge part of his life is dedicated to horology and he has a truly remarkable collection.

Two suggestions:

- In the sub-section 'Other Ventures', under the heading 'Writing', it should be noted that John contributes regularly to one of the most popular watch media sites, Hodinkee, and is recognised as part of the team.

- In personal life, or a section that someone thinks is more appropriate, it should be noted that he has amassed a watch collection consisting of both vintage and modern timepieces, that exceeds $20 million in value [source: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/john-mayer-in-his-own-words-20100122].
